All I want to do is to sync my contacts and calendar ... is there a (free) program that will do this? Thanks!

I think either Gmail or Yahoo does. Can't remember which one, but I'm pretty sure one of em does.

I use yahoo to sync contacts, but i can't get it to work on the calendar... any ideas?

You could try Mail2Web.

It's a service from Microsoft and also works as Exchange and syncs contacts and calendars. I've found it to work pretty well.

google will sync your calendar via third party apps (sorry, don't know the names off-hand).

Goosync is one of them. They now have an iPhone client...not sure how well it actually works, though.
