background: i have the 16gb 3g phone which i jailbroke (i think thats what its called). because of this i never installed the new updates (i think i am running 2.0.0).
today i installed an app from the appstore directly from my phone.
now the phone is black with the silver apple logo. i can turn the phone on and off, but i just get this same screen.
did i brick my phone? if so, what can i do to fix it? i havent synced with my laptop in a while so is all my information lost?
thanks for the help

you can put it into recovery mode by holding down the home and lock buttons for ten seconds and letting go of the lock and holding home for 10 more. Itunes will recognize it then you can do a restore. You'll have to resync after to get your data back

I don't know when people will learn--jailbreaking is foolish and causes more headaches than are necessary.

To each his own on the Jailbreaking issue but it certainly seems a greater majority of the people that do (myself included) benefit more than suffer.

I don't see how downloading an app from the app store while jailbroken can brick a phone...
Just a little bit ago I downloaded an app and I'm jailbroken, and my phone works fine...

Certain apps are made to run on 2.1. He was running 2.0 so if he downloaded an app that wasnt meant for his version, that could've done it.

That's not necessarily true. I'm not one of the people who claims jailbreaking is the only way to enjoy your phone, but there are a lot of benefits that can come from this. You just have to know what you're doing; if you have no idea of what you're doing, it's likely you'll screw up. You really can't say if it's great or it it's a waste of time until you try it.

Agree'd ... And I must add that you should always do your homework before making decisions when in Jailbroken mode.

I totally disagree. I can take an assessment of the sheer volume of posts on this site and others, where there are many more problems experienced by jailbreakers than those that play by the rules, and correctly determine that it is not worth it to me. So it is a waste of time to me. I'm free to make that determination, just as you are free to decide if it is for you. I don't have to do it to determine that. With that logic, that's like saying I'd have to actually jump out of an airplane to determine if that was something I should do...when if I decide from watching others doing it and seeing the risks, that I determine it's not worth it for me. Just an example--I have seven jumps under me.

impaler - Don't Jump!!!!! --- I do like the way you think.
ya, it's not bricked, just have to DFU it and restore as said previously... will you lose data, probably, but better than losing your phone...

I used to be anti-iphone. Coworker didn't let up until I tried one and now I can't get enough.
I used to be anti-jailbreak, like hardcore, until I tried it. Now I don't think I can ever go back to official firmware. There are so many more useful tools on the jailbroken side, that are FREE.
I just like having a flashlight that actually changes the screens brightness! A blacklist program, video recorder, power tools, wifi toggle app, copy and paste, document manager, MORE preferences and settings including hiding icons not used, skinning, themes, custom icons, custom labels, AWESOME Neotech font, custom sounds, more games....
I could go on but you get my point.
Jailbreaking is relatively safe but as a prior user pointed out, make sure you know what you're doing. What that means is make sure you can look up how to do a full restore should anything happen and you're good.
Oh and btw, there is also a backup application for when you're jailbroken that will back up your settings and stuff.

Before the 2.1 update I was restoring and rejailbreaking my 3G virtually every other day, sometimes more.Since the 2.1 update I havent had to restore.

I like how you spin it with the "playing by the rules" comment. What the hell are you talking about!? What rules? Your Mommy and Daddy's? That makes no sense. You're justifying your muddled reasoning. The reason there appears to be more problems is because jailbraking is like exploring uncharted territory. There are no instructions and guides to help along the way... communication among other "explorers" is vital. This is how the world works. This is called progress, (not breaking the rules).
Unlike your limited and numbered abilities on your phone, mine are limitless, comparatively speaking. My phone can do more.
As far as your seven jumps go...I'm not impressed.. Mine were war time jumps. That'll cure you from glamorizing thrill-seeking stunts.

It is virtually impossible to damage your phone jailbreaking. I've never heard of anyone bricking their phone as a result of jailbreaking. The worse thing that could happen is either you'll get hung up in a process trying to complete it or it may be buggy when done. In either case, repeating the process will correct the situation. It's a no brainer if you're willing to take 30 minutes to learn how to do it and you don't walk on your hands! LOL
Even if you're not interested in the additional functionality, everyone can appreciate the ability to change the themes of your home screen.

I'm talking about Apple's and AT&T's rules. They don't want us jailbreaking (not "jailbraking"), so I'm not. What about my reasoning is muddled? I gotta hear this one.
Your abilities are not limitless--that's a completely irresponsible and dishonest thing to say--you're limited to the abilities of the phone. s
Look, dummy, there are no instructions because it's NOT SUPPORTED. Come on. At least I thought you could be intellectually honest enough to admit nobody at AT&T and Apple wants you jailbreaking. It's not progress. Let me give you yet one more analogy, and I'll type SLOW this time so you can understand. If progress is associated with breaking the rules, then with that logic, I guess to show progress relating to improving car efficiency, I can decide to modify my car's engine to break the emissions laws of my state...and when called out on it, just chalk it to "exploration". Gimmie a break. Weak.
Wow, you have "war time" jumps...wow...you really got me...I'm so put in my place...thank you for showing me the errs of my ways...LMAO I'm so not impressed with that...because that was not my point.
I'm done with this topic, I'm bored now.

Almost all of the employees "at" Apple are jailbroken, and AT&T could care less if you're jailbroken. The just don't want you unlocking.

First - I would expect the App store to warn you if it requires 2.1 and even if it did install, all it would do is crash upon launch. It certainly wouldn't take your whole phone down.

PS How did we get to talking about jumping out of planes... jailbreak or don't who gives a #%#% ;)

You cannot compare modding a car to jailbreaking an iphone. Two COMPLETELY different worlds. One will push the vehicle beyond factory tolerances, break ACTUAL laws regarding emissions (should the cat be replaced, removed, or modified, or the pcv system be tampered with ie breather). These things will VOID your factory warranty as the stock hardware simply was not designed to run with the added stresses.
How in the world can you compare that to a phone's software mod? You're not pushing the phone beyond its designed capabilities, just changing the WAY its used. The phone's hardware itself is not being changed in any way...it will run AS designed up to a time where you decide to change the core os back to stock.
Another analogy...its like installing linux on a brand new dell that came with vista...dell won't support the software, but if you have a hardware failure the system itself is still under warranty. If you want software help you'd have to hit some forums (like a jailbroken iphone). Or, consequently, you can put it back to vista, and get help from Dell.

first of all your reasoning is flawed. You are seeing posts from people with problems becuase most people do not take the time to post "I jailbroke and everything is fine". People post to get help, which invariably is a result of thier own mistakes. Second, if you havent jailbroken then you really are not in a position to even evaluate if it could be helpfull or not.
One day with intelliscreen and you will be amazed at how much better the iphone can be.
