I've been waiting for a 32 GB version since I got my v1. I'm definitely going to be unloading my 16 GB on eBay or Craigslist once 32 GB is announced. I'm a bit skeptical as to a release next week but I'm sure it's just beyond the horizon.

don't you have to be eligible for an upgrade, though?

I think I'm going to have to buy it at the unsubsidized price which is a bit unfortunate. I'm looking at prices on eBay but they are for "unlocked" 3G iPhones. Have I missed an unlock for the 2.1 3G?

That's exactly how I am thinking.
I could have probably gotten away with the 8GB model - :P
Why can't Apple just release all of them at the same time? They seem to alienate people by doing this. They know people will want the 32GB but they also know people won't wait that want an iPhone.

for people like you and me, we buy the biggest capacity phone when the "new phone" comes out, the whole time knowing that they will follow suit and release bigger GB phone. But there will still be people also like us who are willing to drop the $$$ to get it. So either way, Apple gets more money, from those who waited and those who will wheel and deal with someone to buy their current phone so that they can get the bigger one.
I agree with you, it sux all kinds of ass and even pisses me off to an extent, BUT, I'm not going to be boycotting Apple or anything like that and will get the next gen of iPhone when it comes out.... Though I think I'll wait this time for the "late" arrival of the next gen.

Sometimes when you get the bigger capacity, you find ways to fill up the rest of the size. When I first tried on the 8gb iPod touch (back when they only had 8 and 16), I found myself using it so much more than I thought, and I got the 16gb when they didn't have an 8gb to replace a dud with. Still filled that one up too. I would wager a guess that when they come out with the 64gb iPod touch, I could STILL find a way to fill it up, even though that's starting to get into the range of being most of my tablet's available hard drive space and I don't have nearly that much media right now. Now, the 160 gig Classic, I am not so sure I could fill that up, because it's actually a less capable device, and I might not use it so much... but if there were ever a hard drive iPod touch released that contained massive capacity, I'd definitely fill it up. They might need to give me the ability to add more home screen pages, though.

i hope they give up on HDs in ipods soon. It's gotten to the point where SS storage in Touches have surpassed the original iPod. And after all, how many people actually use 160GB of storage?

true but many people like to store video one the iPods also. I know I'm going on a trip with the family shortly and I have loaded my old classic with videos for the kids. I had to take my music off due to lack of capcity. Solid state is the way forward but it will take a year or so yet to reach capacity/price.

My 16g will be a week old next week. Considering that the ATT store exchanged my wife's 2 day old frozen 8g last week for a new 16g (restocking fee plus price difference), I think I can get them to exchange my 16g for a 32g for the $20 restocking fee and any price difference if it comes out next week.
It is worth a shot.
As long as you're within the 2 week return period

Isn't the week since the OP over? If a 32GB phone is in the works, I'm thinking of January (like the v1 upgrade).
I don't think so.
well isnt there like a 30day exchange thing with iphones?

Yeah there is a 30 day return if you bought it from AT&T and not apple. At apple it is 14 days.

As a matter of fact you are correct! Let's just have this conversation each week until January.
It somehow feels better to talk about it like it's coming next week, that doesn't seem too far away.

I might be purchasing the 32gb because I often, even daily use my iPhone with Cycorder as a video camera alternative.
And as many of you will know the resulting video files are massive.
But the video+sound quality is quite good, So I'm not complaining.
Just worried about the price of 32gb though.

I would definitely upgrade to the 32 Gig version when it comes out. Mostly because it is the largest capacity and I do have a large music collection.

I would think if a 32GB came out, the 8GB would be discontinued. Although 16GB is perfect for me, I can't see getting by with 8 GB unless you don't sync ANY music or videos.
And I'm thinking the 16GB would be $199 and the 32GB would take over the $299 spot, all subsidized prices of course.
I also think this won't happen until the Blackberry Storm comes out and perhaps even after the Nokia 8500. It would be a great time to underscore the lack of onboard memory on other phones. I always felt you didn't need removable storage if you have enough onboard storage.

I've had to cut about 10-15 albums from my usual iPhone playlist to make room for apps. These suckers are a lot bigger than I thought they would be and they add up!
Plus, I like to leave at least a couple hundred megs for cycorder. Getting tight on an 8 gigger these days :(

the chrome backs on the ipods are NOT very durable. I'm very happy with how my aluminum back has held up over the past 13 months. Makes me sad that they've abandoned the material on the touches and iphones.

I've heard that the 3G radio and the GPS radio don't penetrate aluminum as easily as plastic. That's probably why we don't see droves of mobile phones with aluminum backings.
Also, I want push notifications, cut & paste and A2DP before the 32GB iPhone.

Yeah, I thought I'd want a 32 GB for sure, but i'm still sitting well under the 8gb used mark on my 16gb. I think the focus for updates from apple should really be on camera quality, and finally giving us all of the software additions that we need... copy/paste, mms, etc

I couldn't care less about 32G of memory. My 16G 3G is only half-filled right now and I can always swap stuff out with iTunes if I really needed to. I have no desire to cram every bit of audio and video I own onto a cell phone at the same time.

Lol yeah, I don't even know what's the point of iTunes when you can easily download songs FOR FREE and transfer them to your iPhone. Also the mail application which isn't benefitting me in any means. Of course the Stocks one is far from being prior to me, because I never really studied accounting. Maps which is kind of cool, still has a flaw which it needs GPS and iPhone doesn't work on GPS right when you activate your Wifi, but your network provider has to do it for you and that blows. The Facebook application which I downloaded isn't that cool either, because I only created my facebook profile for my friends at school and at the club, other than that I wouldn't have done it anyway, I hate it. The Shazam application which I totally love is the best application in the App Store I guess. Also the WifiToggle application which you can get from Cydia happens to be one of my favorites, it'll save you time :).

-I wanted an iPhone cause I had an iPod that performed well as an MP3 player and owning a previous apple product kinda bridged me to the iPhone I guess you could say like how some iPhone owners decide to later on buy a MacBook and vice versa:wink:

i dont see it happening until NAND flash memory prices drop to half of what they are right now. granted, the 32GB touch is well priced at $399, and with subsidizing, could go easily for $199 based on at&t's $200 subsidy, but you have to factor in the additional hardware costs put into the iphone compared to the Touch.
with apple's hardware profit model, a 32GB iphone would have to retail at $400+ AFTER subsidizing to maintain their desired profit margin. and comparing 3g sales to the first gen sales, that would just be too expensive for the majority of potential buyers.
so many people are buying the 8GB iphone due to price compared to the 16GB version that as production costs fall, apple would prefer to increase their profit margin than EOL the 8GB and replace it with a slimmer margin 32GB version.
