Oh my God, after standing in line 8 hours on July 11th for the new 3G, I washed and dried my phone yesterday! Needless to say it is ruined, returned to Apple, phone not covered under warranty or my extended Apple Cares protection. Had to buy a new phone without the ATT new customer discount...$499! I am ready to cry, scream, something!

Sorry to hear that. I often forget I've left things in my pocket.
Hope the new phone will make you as happy as the original.

yeah... that really stinks... I try to check my pockets all the time but I'm not always so diligent. If nothing else, hopefully this thread will help others avoid the mistake.

I belive there is a marker on the phone that they can look at to see if it has been dropped in water.

Post a pic of the washed iPhone if you can.

How long does a load of laundry take? Like... over an hour, right? I can't remember the last time I went that long without at least reaching in my pocket and touching my iPhone...
Another reason for a holster. I know alot of people hate them, but I've always used one.

Will there be services to pay our last respects, or at least send flowers?
Sucks man, but I bet you'll never do it again!
My condolences for your loss!! :(

The water market is straight down the earphone jack. It should have turned red when it got wet. Drop a drop of bleach on the marker and take it back and try again.

sorry to hear man that's real unfortunate. Try selling it on eBay (of course stating it's real co ndition). I bet you'd find someone who is willing to buy it

Note, there is no water detector inside the heaphone socket of the 3G version, only the original iPhone. The water detection paper (x2) is inside the 3G so they would have to open it to detect which I am sure they would do. A Genius cannot detect by using his scope down the headphone socket.

Hopefully this works, never added a pic before. Screen had obvious water damage which is still present. The day I washed it, it also had obvious water droplet look to the camera. No Genius needed to figure out what I did!
that sucks. like what some others have said, sell it on ebay. people need replacement parts, ie; screens, etc. i had to pay $500 for my phone as well and waited in line 2 times!

honestly I can't feel bad for some who...
A. Forgets/doesn't check their pockets when doing laundry. That's first grader stuff there.
B. Loses/misplaces their phone. Whether it's a tracphone or a $300 iPhone, it's just careless. Again, this is first grader business.
I'm sorry, probably sound like a dickhead. But LOL everyone in this thread is is almost remorseful over carelessness.
I'm of the opinion that I work hard for 40 hours a week to provide for my family and have things like an iPhone. So yes I'm going to take the 30 seconds and check some pockets or AT VERY LEAST shake a pair of jeans upside down. Honestly if this happened to me I'd be way to embarassed to tell anyone, much less try and take it back to either store.
Sorry if I come off like a jerk, it's just one mans opinion.

Check out this site, it says they can repair any phone that went swimming, for 60 bucks. http://www.fastcpr.com/
Worth a shot...good luck.

Yea, I tend to agree with this guy, and Dave. I always know where my phone is. This seems like something that's embarrassing, why share? Maybe b/c the iPhones (me and my wife) are the only phones we have (no house phone), we pay more attention - but even when we had a house phone, we always knew where our cells were.
And $499 isn't a "replacement price" it's the price for any ATT customer who isn't eligible for an upgrade. I'm pretty sure they've done away w/"replacement" phones.

there is actually a liquid indicator on under the charger port on the iphone 3g if you look carefully i think its on the right hand side of it might be left cant remember and you will see it. that's how they know if it got wet or not.

Can you file a claim with your homeowners (or renters) insurance? It's worth a try, don't you think?

I am sorry that you washed your phone. We are all busy and it is pretty easy to screw up and accidently forget stuff. Makes me glad I have a purse!
Do you have a new phone yet? I would make a place that you automatically and always put it when you are at home.

OK. Sorry. I'm just going to say it. KNUCKLEHEAD!
I can't have sympathy for such a stupid stunt.
Flame away on me. I'm just pissed off my team lost today.
That being said I can understand:
I dropped it in the toilet
I dropped it in the driveway and it's in 4 pieces
It slipped from my hands and fell into the Grand Canyon
I was pumping gas and checking my email and i dropped it in my gas tank
My wife had enough of my ignoring her for the iPhone and she smashed it
But I WASHED IT? REALLY?!
I washed my iPhone = KNUCKLEHEAD

now wait a minute. I didn't call "I washed my iPhone guy" an idiot. Let's not put words in my already bitter mouth.
Seriously. If you care enough for something to wait hours in line, join a newsgroup about said object then run it through the wash AND dry cycle.... You are a knucklehead.
And no cpolaris 502 . I've never run an expensive electronic device through the wash. Have you? Then you are a knucklehead too.

"Knucklehead".... it's really a matter of semantics.
The point is... were your posts here really necessary? Do you think by responding in that way you taught him some sort of lesson that hasn't already been learned by him being out $500?
I keep saying him... no offense if the OP is a woman.

I agree completely. If you do something stupid there is no reason to post it on a message board. You're just asking for it.
Don't post this kind of iPhone Darwin award winning post if you can't take a little ribbing.
What are we supposed to say? " oh we are sooooo sorry that you are so careless with your money. Here's a hug".

You should say that sort of thing if you want to make the person feel better. If you want to make them feel worse, you post things like you have continued to post in this thread.
This is a pretty stupid discussion... I learned this stuff in kindergarten. Apparently you learned not to ever make a mistake in kindergarten and to make fun of those that do. To each his own. I'm outta this thread...

Oh and ozzlil. Please. No offense intended. Sorry about your phone. Sincerely.
I could be like the others here and ask for pictures of your misfortune and give you fake sympathy or bull**** advise. Is that somehow better? At least someone on the board had the stones to call it as they see it.

Man, I lost my iPhone a month ago due to water damage, I was at a pool party and I had made sure I gave my Phone to my girl, After a while I got thrown in the pool. No biggies, well around the end of the night, I had my phone back in my pocket, and those "Guys" decided to dump me in the pool again. Needless to say, i was out of a perfect first generation blue tint iPhone.

I my book "those guys" owe you a phone. Through no stupidity of your own you got thrown in the pool, even IF you provoked them, in todays society when horsing around near water, it is good manners to ask your victim if he has a cell phone, ipod, whatever, before dowsing. Those Guys, your friends, aren't really friends at all if they don't make good on destroying your property. That is like driving a friends car into a lake and just walking away from it!
You probably even have a small claims court suit if you want to pursue it.

I had a co worker who was trying to text a friend at a club and some drunk bumped into her and it fell on the floor all soaked in bear. She turned it off and after 3 days of drying it started working again. She did say this was her 3rd replacement phone at full price.
For those who might want to save the upfront cash join a family plan and add a line. Then get a cheap or old phone and put the sim in. Or get on ebay and get another phone that uses web access and let a family member have it and try to get them to pay for the 30 data plan :) Unless you can get it removed.
I wanted an Iphone so they let me take off the data plan on my Blackjack 2 which they said I needed when I got the phone on discount since I was getting it on my new Iphone. So even though the contract said I had to have the data plan they were ok with removing it. Don't understand the logic but I was ok with it.
I will say I had one friend a long time ago who took over my ATT at the time and he left it on top of the car and drove off. Hard lesson learned. He had to pay my remaining contract because I wouldn't replace the phone.
