I'm a windows user needing to jailbreak and unlock my V1 iphone and I had a custom 2.1 firmware that I downloaded off the net that someone else made with pwnage, but when I tried to use it with my phone in DFU mode I always got the itunes 1600 error. Here is a method to unlock and jailbreak that works.
I have used the method psylichon posted HERE (http://www.everythingicafe.com/forum/iphone-modifications/how-to-jailbreak-2-1-on-windows-tonight-36788.html) to jailbreak and it does work but it's a pain (15 or so steps) and more importantly for me it does not unlock V1 iphones, only jailbreaks.
I found this method posted somewhere, tried it and it worked flawlessly for unlocking and jailbreaking the V1 iphone, and i would expect it would work fine for jailbreaking the 3G (it won't unlock it), you would just need to use a custom 2.1 firmware file created for the 3G.
You need 2 things. Winpwn 2.5 GET IT HERE (http://rapidshare.com/files/141607044/winpwn-2.5-BETA_2_Setup.zip.html)and a custom 2.1 firmware created by pwnage tool, just get one from a friend who has a mac or one that has been posted on the internet, they are easy to find if you do some googleing, or maybe someone here on the forum will upload one for you. Make sure the file you get is for your iphone (the V1 and 3G need different settings)
All you gotta do is run winpwn as if you are jailbreaking 2.0.2 and after it goes through the step of putting your phone in DFU mode it will turn your phone's screen white. Then you just close winpwn (my winpwn actually crashed at this stage), open itunes, and restore your phone to the custom firmware.
That's it!
