I have an iPhone 3g that was jailbroken now it is restored and running 2.1. My question is why is my wallpaper locked to the old image, I cant change it to anything (again my phone is now not jailbroken)
I had the same thing happen to me when I upgraded to 2.0.1 after jailbreaking 2.0. It's because the file used to hold the wallpaper isn't overwritten so you should be able to go pick an new Wallpaper in Settings and it will replace what you had.
If you can't change it, it may be that the file (I think it's called LockBackground.jpg in the private/var/mobile/Library folder on the phone) is read-only and can't be overwritten.

What software can I use to actually "browse" the iPhone?
On a Mac, you can use a program like Fetch or on a PC, you can use Puddy. Fetch has to be set up to make an SSH connection but Puddy defaults to SSH, I think. Do a Search here on the forum for OpenSSH, there should be lots of info on how to connect. You'll need to be on a WiFi network for it to work.

I have a 3g iphone, never jail broken and currently at 2.1 fw. I can not change my wallpaper through ANY method on the iPhone - picking a photo nor using settings. How is this broken? I did restore my 3g iphone when I first got it from my old 2g iPhone. I have not messed with wallpapers till today and have done the various version upgrades as they became available for the 3g iPhone. How do I fix this without hacking the phone?
So, I did a restore. This clears everthing from my iPhone and places a fresh FW on the phone. However, once it comes back into itunes it is thought of as a NEW iphone. You are then asked to restore with a backup. Here is the problem as the backup of this iPhone I believe is somehow corrupted to not allow me to pick a new wallpaper. This may have been a mistake in my steps. I did not see a way to simply SYNC this "new" iPhone to my previously synced information from this iPhone. Anyway, I did the restore with backup and yes, the wallpaper change does not work.
