View Full Version : How to jailbreak 2.1 on Windows tonight...

EDIT 9/19/08: A new version of the full-GUI Quickpwn was released for Windows today. It is a much easier and more complete method than this guide, so go here to download:
http://www.quickpwn.com/2008/09/jailbreak-iphone-21-gui-version.html
...
Ok, I've discussed this in various places here, but I figured I'd write up a clarified version of the procedure to do this for folks who don't want to wait for the Dev team to kick out a new Winpwn. I've done it on two phones now and it's actually pretty easy and appears to be rock solid. I did not come up with this, I've modified the procedure I found here:
http://www.quickpwn.com/2008/09/jailbreak-iphone-21.html
***PLEASE NOTE*** The other guide says you need to downgrade iTunes to 7.7 after first installing 2.1 with iTunes 8. This is not true. I just pwned my wife's phone no problem with iTunes 8 the whole time. You don't even use iTunes to pwn with this procedure. So don't stress that if you've read it elsewhere. Also, I did this in XP, but there is little that should be different for a Vista install, however I'd love feedback from those doing it in Vista)
***ALSO NOTE*** iTunes downloads and stores the 2.1 firmware file you need to pwn on your computer when you update through iTunes. If you cannot find it as per the guide below, you can either search for the filename on your hard drives ("iPhone1,1_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw" for V1, "iPhone1,2_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw" for 3G), or download them from these links:
iPhone V1:
http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-5202.20080909.gkbEj/iPhone1,1_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw
iPhone 3G:
http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-5198.20080909.K3294/iPhone1,2_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw
OK, here goes:
1. Using iTunes 8, update to firmware 2.1. IMPORTANT: I set up as a new user. Others have indicated problems when restoring from a backup. To be safe, always update as a new device. Make sure you have your contacts and other data synced to external programs (outlook, windows address book, etc.) Close iTunes.
2. Download QuickPWN iPhone 2.1 Jailbreak (http://www.zshare.net/download/18681744057a2ce6/)
3. Run the QuickPWN-GUI.exe file and browse and select the 2.1 firmware you just used to update. In XP, it can be found in "c:/Documents and Settings/[user]/Application Data/Apple Computer/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates"... or else just search for the files or download from the links above.
4. Follow the on-screen steps, choose Installer and Cydia. You should know how to get your iPhone into DFU mode. The Quickpwn app will walk you through it, but it's good to be familiar with the process first
5. Once finished, your iPhone will reboot, but Installer and Cydia won't be visible. It will take a while to reboot. Don't stress.
6. Download & Install DiskAid from here:
http://www.digidna.net/downloads/download.php?product=DiskAid&version=1.5&sys=win
7. Connect your iPhone via USB to your computer and launch the DiskAid program.
8. When the DiskAid screen launches, you'll see a drop-down box on the bottom left that says "Media Folder". Click on it, and select "Root Folder" instead.
9. You'll get a Root Partition message. Click ok.
10. On the left side, scroll down and click the System folder. Now click the Library Folder. Scroll down and click the "PrivateFrameworks" folder.
11. On the left side, scroll down and click on the "MobileInstallation.framework" folder.
12. On the right, select the MobileInstallation file, and click "Delete from Device".
13. Download the new MobileInstallation patch from here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/pcrxy6
14. In DiskAid, click "Copy File to Device", and select the MobileInstallation file you downloaded.
15. In DiskAid, navigate to /private/var/mobile/Library/Caches and delete the following file: com.apple.mobile.installation.plist
16. Reboot your iPhone, and Installer & Cydia should show up.
You're now jailbroken! Congrats...

That's as far as I got. DiskAid won't let me click on and change to Root Folder. It's greyd out. I'm using Vista. :frown:
Nevermind. Went thru process a 2nd time and it worked this time. Thanks!!

I kept getting the itunes 1600 error when trying to restore to a custim 2.1 firmware before, so thanks for the guide, it worked great!
(make sure you have .NET framework 2.0 installed properly or quickpwn won't work, and make sure there are no apple processes running (check with task manager)) - those were the only hiccups I ran into!

I might just have to try this tonight.
I should turn this into a guide with pictures and post it on the web.
1. Using iTunes 8, update to firmware 2.1. IMPORTANT: I set up as a new user. Others have indicated problems when restoring from a backup. To be safe, always update as a new device.
Is this really necessary? I already have 2.1 on my phone and I did so using the normal method (restoring all my stuff automatically). My phone is a working 2.1 unjailbroken device. Can't I start from here?
Thanks for all the work you put into this. I am hopeful to get this done soon. I really need to get better email and SMS sounds installed.

i had mine on a working 2.1 unjailbroken device, and when i didn't set up as new user and tried to restore from my old backup i got an infinite crash loop. i repeated the process 3 times, and finally decided to set up as a new device and start over. :embarrassed:

Instead of high jacking this thread, why don't you try reSEARCHing the many threads about the pros and cons of 2.1? Your question requires going back through and rehashing what has already been discussed DAYS ago........ Make a decision on your own. It isn't called an "update" for nothing.... Update and re jailbreak like the rest of us for Christ's sake....
Don't mean to bust your ass........ sorry. Just update.

Does Jailbreaking compromise functionality/stability of the Iphone?
Any horror stories of bad crashes??
Pondering jailbreaking but pretty happy unjailbroken at the mo.
Can someone in the know give me 10 good reasons to jailbreak??
Don't know about GOOD reasons, this is a subjective evaluation. Here are several reasons.
1) Mxtube - download videos from youtube onto your phone
2) WinSCP - change any sound on your phone you want.
The first is only good if you plan to show someone a video from youtube, but you know that where you will be showing it to them there's no WIFI (only edge - youtube sucks on edge if you can get it to work at all). I grabbed the awesome in-car footage of the Hamilton vs. Raikkonen F1 battle at SPA.
The second is only useful if you know or can figure out the filesystem on the phone. You can for example convert an MP3 sound sample to AIF using iTunes, then rename the file from AIF to CAF extension, then use WinSCP to replace one of the UI sounds on the iPhone. It's a geek thing. :tounge:
Combine these two things and you can transfer the youtube MP4 videos from your iPhone onto your PC. I was able to mail the SPA video to friends.
3) NES emulator - tiny controls, intermittent sound on some games, but way cool to have a bazillion NES games on your phone. :2cool:
4) Touchpad Pro - well, actually this does not work anymore, but it used to be awesome for controlling the home theater. I hope the author updates this or goes "legit" in the app store.

Be careful around the step where you replace the MobileInstallation file. It sounds like you made a mistake somewhere there. Make sure you are deleting just the MobileInstallation file and not the entire MobileInstallation.framework folder. I accidentally did that the first time, had the same symptoms as you, and had to raid the Dev team's IRC channel to find a good samaritan to hook me back up. Don't do that... just replace the file in that folder.
If worse comes to worst, you can always just restore to the regular 2.1 firmware using iTunes.
the only problem i have is when i quickpwned it i checked the custom bootload screens and at first the pineapple would come up but now when i restart my phone, i have no bootload screen... its just black but its not a major problem for me...

Could someone who did this procedure on a V1 iPhone please PM me? It's a long story, and no big deal... just a hunch. But I could use a favor. Thanks.
edit: nevermind... someone over at the Dev team's IRC channel hooked me up (again).
Long story short: When I accidentally deleted the entire Mobileinstallation.framework folder instead of just the file, I got a backup folder from someone on IRC. But it was for iPod Touch. Apparently, they are similar, but different. My phone worked and was stable, but installing apps took too long, and I had a couple lags. I got a proper replacement folder tonight and all is well. No more lags. Categories loads in half the time now. No one experienced this stuff but me, but I still thought I'd share for S+G.

Solved this problem. I think the issue is due to dns resolution. Cydia cannot find the url for depository and not able to upgrade itself.
Also, for the error where iTunes 8.0 cannot backup and restore properly. I delete my backup profile in iTunes and then when resync jailbroken version, it can sync properly.

yeah i tried it before i just restored it back to 2.1 unjailbroken. I'm most likely not going to jailbreak until the end of the week when i have time to test it out for like two days and then we'll see. It's still a good thing that it mostly worked. I probably messed up somewhere.

Once you have installed the 2.1 firmware in iTunes, do a reboot, turn off any firewalls and screen savers. That will ensure a fresh PC without anything running.

itunes opens automatically when I connect the phone or reboot with it connected, how do I change that. I have tried going through the processes that are running and nothing that I can tell is associated with itunes is running after I close it and I still get the error.

plug in your iphone before you start any of the process like right after you update to 2.1 firmware, keep your iphone plugged in... (you will need it plugged in anyways). since your phone is already plugged in, itunes wont open up... and make sure you have .net framework 2.0 installed on your computer

itunes opens automatically when I connect the phone or reboot with it connected, how do I change that. I have tried going through the processes that are running and nothing that I can tell is associated with itunes is running after I close it and I still get the error.
Thanks,
Brian
In iTunes, uncheck the box "Automatic sync when this iPhone is connected.".

it is normal. as you are using the 2.1 fw to restore. Similar to itunes download and if the fw is custom_ipsw, then it will maintain the baseband fw. Or else it will update the basedband fw to 02.11.07. Check your Modem Firmware version in settings to confirm this.

Hey... Could someone post a guide about installing third party apps.? I've tried to do so (not from Cydia or Installer) and had the following problems... Note that I've already Jailbroken my 2.1 Firmware...
Problem 1: I cannot sync .ipa files with iTunes 8. Well, i think iTunes 8 ought to be patched since it's jailbreak-free. Also, the Applications tab in the iPhone interface in iTunes 8 gets deactivated after that.
However, .ipa files could be opened with winrar to extract the application.app folder.
Problem 2: After trying to install the .app folder, my iPhone does not boot up. I had to restore the Firmware again.
Please help me with this. I/we would be glad if you could post a tutorial and also an example (say Asphalt Elite Racer) as to installing 3rd party apps the .app copy way.
Thanks in advance.

Hi thanks, but what I mean is that the physical blue "app store" icon and the purple "itunes" icon on my iphone don't work. My other apps work fine it just means that I cant browse the app store from my iphone because it crashes straight back to the home screen!

There really is no need for a tutorial for quickpwn 2.1. It's gives you step by step directions on what to do. I used it earlier to j/b a friend's 3G. It even guides you on getting into DFU.

Yep Yahoo contacts can be synced. goto the Info tab in iTunes and check the "sync contacts with" box and select Yahoo! Address book from the drop down box.

I can't get WiFi to show up on the phone. I used the Pwnage tool to unlock and jailbreak the phone with 2.1. I go into setting and it says no Wi-Fi. I can't even go into Wi-Fi settings. Any idea of why this is happening?

I'm freazing at "Preparing your device - please follow the instructions above".
I've tried letting it sit waiting for the second line to become darker; that is;
"Hold down the home button for five seconds"
I've went ahead and let the phone reboot in recovery and then just put it in DFU as per the instructions...
either way, nothing happens. Froze.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

ok ...all you guys with the freezing at 'preparing ' stage:
I had that too, tried probably 15 times the last 3 days...just 'broke' the phone!!! Yaay:

1. Redownloaded and installed quickpwn
2.restarted myncomputer right after
3. Voila the numbers started the countdowns and I was there!

If you guys are using a firewall, it's always advisable to stop that for the jailbreaking process also. I've had many a time where the firewall turned back on and freaked everything out. A reboot is also a good option also. Especially with Windows. Also plugging the USB cable directly into the computer and not via a hub helps a lot.
Can't think of any other recommendations at this point?

I used qickpwn 2.1 to unlock/jailbreak my v1 iphone with 2.1 firmware. When I put my son's tmobile sim in the phone, the phone says new sim installed and connect to itunes. itunes says this an unauthorized sim. So, the question is did the unlock process really work? What I am I doing wrong?

The 3G cannot be unlocked. Quickpwn only jailbreaks the 3G and nothing else.

so I did the jb using the 'new' quickpwn for windows. It worked without problem. I did not use diskaid because after running quickpwn, cydia and installer was on my phone.
Problem is... Now when I press the phone icon, it just crashes back to the home screen. I can't make calls from the phone! I can make calls from my car via Bluetooth and can receive calls. Just can't make calls from the phone.
Amy suggestions?
i actually had to rejailbreak and used method posted just above this, (from iphone-hacks.com) it worked better, and no diskaid needed.

Well, I JB'ed today using the instructions found here from the iClarified (http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1881) site (using Quickpwn), and everything went smoothly. The Cydia and Installer icons were there, so I didn't have to use DiskAid to muck with any system files.
