I am still loving my MBA and don't see any changes coming for it for another few months at least but my roommate is extremely excited. She really wanted the black MB but now I think she's bent on getting one with the new aluminum casing. I still wouldn't mind a black MB as I think they are very svelte.

I am really hoping the MBA gets an update, too. I know a lot of folks don't think it's likely, but they could at least put the 120GB hard drive from the iPod Classic in there since it will fit!

I can't wait till they update the MB. Especially if it changes to aluminum, but either way I won't be getting one till at least Christmas (probably later)

So it's for sure that the new MacBooks are comin. I had been reading and hearing things. Has anybody heard anything else about them besides being aluminum casing.

well doesn't apple usually just drop the new models into the same prices of the "older" models. I was in the apple dealer yesterday and was real close to picking up a MacBook but I was thinking that they are going to update pretty quick so I'm going to wait and see. Is there a long wait to get the new MacBook?

There won't be any lines like for the phone. But you did pick a good time to buy. You now have 2 choices. You can get one of the newer ones, or you should be seeing sales pretty soon on the older models. I don't think Apple ever puts them on sale, but a lot of other places do, like Best Buy or numerous online retailers.

That's what I was thinking. I live in a smaller town and we don't have an apple store anywhere around me. I spoke to the guy severel times and that's what made me decide to wait. If I think the new upgrades are significant enough then I will buy a new model if they are just minor I will get the current 2.4 Ghz model for a decent price. Have we heard about any performance upgrades?

I was just on macrumors and they showed the official invitation for the event in the 4th. It said "the spotlight is now on notebooks" and it had a picture that was exactly what the quote said. I think it looks really cool, and they also had a story that the rumored price drop would be from $1099 to $800 instead of $999

New MacBooks available now at the Apple Store.

Sucks that they didn't make the new Aluminum Macbook $999 ... It's like they added a new "Macbook Aluminum" line and left the plastic ones available. Or perhaps this is a inventory control issue with the economy performing the way it is.

They look really nice but aluminum gets so hot! My macbook pro gets insanely hot after about an hour of use. They should have make the macbook air like the other macbooks with the black border on the screen.

The fact that the aluminum gets hot means that it's getting cooler on the inside. ;) the plastic cased Macbooks stayed hotter on the inside, which decreased their performance and lifespan

MacBooks appear to be the best part of today's announcement. You get MacBook Pro features at MacBook prices. I think it'll definitely cut into the Pro sales.

no, they thought of that chris, that is why they left out the firewire port, people want that, i hate that they got rid of the firewire 400 that is what i use to transfer video. even the simple home video makers will not be able to plug in their video cameras and use imovie with the new, USB ONLY macbooks....

You are 100% correct. I normally use firewire when shooting photos for the sites. I use Olympus Studio, which enables me to shoot photos and see them instantly on my MacBook Pro. I'm sure it would work with USB, but I wonder what the tradeoff would be speed wise. Big question would be, "Why should I have to make tradeoffs when purchasing a $2000 plus laptop?"

yea man, this is a rip off move to remove the firewire from the macbooks, ,that is just lame, i mean my ibook has a firewire port, i just dont know what to say about this at all....

I agree. I have the money, and as of last night, was fully planning on ordering a new MacBook today, despite the fact that I purchased my current one in May.. but I think I'll stick with my BlackBook for another year or so. First, the disappointment of no FireWire. Usuaully I agree with Apple when they leave standard things out of new products (it usually makes sense) but I use FireWire all the time and can't live without it (for now).

Second, the design is pretty nice, but I prefer the all black design. The aluminum part of it is tempting, but the color differences are.. eh. The power, though, is very tempting.. as is Apple's new cinema display. I have a feeling, though, that my next Mac will be a Mac Pro and I'll keep my current MacBook for traveling for quite a while.

It's a continuation of Apple's abandonment of the firewire protocol that they had a huge hand in bringing to the market in the first place. It is inexplicable to me why they now hate firewire so much, but its absence is definitely the direction they seem to be going with new products.

Okay... just watched the new MacBook video. A few impressions.. first, very rarely do you see Jonny Ive appear in a video. Off topic, but IMO, he's the best choice for next CEO. Second, music choices in the video; nice. Life In Technicolor and City of Blinding Lights. Third.. my opinions may have changed. It actually does look pretty nice, now that I see it in action. Still, no FireWire. I'll have to sleep on this one.

jjvaldez

yea im still bothered that they did that, im just thinking for the consumer that juat wants to make the home videos via imovie and what not....

i don't disagree with the exclusion of firewire. Not THAT many people use it, and those that do are probably heavy video-users who would probably be better suited to a MB Pro anyways (which DOES have a firewire 800 port).

That said, for people that absolutely have to have it on a MacBook, it is possible to add firewire ports via the express/34 slot. Maybe costs $20.

i DO, however, have a complaint about the mini-DVI port. That's just a pain in the ass. I know the previous macbooks had a mini-dvi, but my gripe is that the MBPs do now as well.

I am superficial. I like how it looks. I have the money, but I am not going to spend $1200 right now. Economy is not too good. Maybe I will get one at Christmas and give my kids my Macbook. I usually get some cash at Christmas.

I am afraid if I go to the Apple store I will be sucked into the purchase...

Not sure what all the kerfuffle is about lack of FireWire, I've come across a grand total of 1 product in my time that uses FireWire, and that is a digital video camera. Big deal you don't have firewire, theres a reason they are phasing it out, it failed, miserably, usb, even though its slower just took off like a rocket, and nearly every peripheral on the market uses USB. They're backing the winner, and there is honestly nothing wrong with that.

Besides, I don't get this deal with it being "slower", most flash memory has lower read/write speeds than the USB interface has throughput, so wheres the issue?

Either way, I'm a long long long time Windows user, and will continue to be, but these new laptops have sold me, once my new MC gets here(forgot it at a store and they cut it up!) I am going to order one straight away. All my MS fanboy friends are crying as I make this post. Can't fight the sexy Macs though.

I agree with ChuckleBrother. The average person does not use fire wire, and since the MacBook is targeted to the average people, it doesn't need firewire. Most people don't even know what it is for. I didn't really know until I read this thread.

Now about the rest of the design, absolutely amazing. I love the trackpad, the aluminum, the unibody form, the LCD screen, etc. I really really want one. I don't see myself actually getting one in the near future though :(

You folks that are using USB instead of Firewire for your external hard drives don't know what you're missing. I don't care if the "average person" uses it or not, the death of the Firewire protocol is a sad thing.

eSATA works fine for me... And USB 3.0 will be out soon enough. And the fact that the "average" user doesn't need FireWire is exactly why the MacBook doesn't have it, and the MacBook pro does.

What kind of data do people transfer and to what kind of device? Is it a noticable difference in speed? How about for just uploading videos to the ipod or spongs for that matter? Are we talking up to 2x as quick?

USB 2.0 ~ 240 Mbps
Firewire 400 ~ 400 Mbps
FireWire 800 ~ 800 Mbps
eSATA 1.1 ~1500
eSATA 1.2 ~3000

USB 3.0 is on the horizon with a theoretical speed 10 times that of USB 2.0...

Oh, and apple dropped FireWire support on iPods a few years ago (iPhones too).

ChuckleBrother
10-15-2008, 08:32 PM
Isn't USB 2.0 480 not 240?

Either way, your average user likely doesn't need anything faster, hence its move to the MBP from the standard Macs.

Still can't wait till I can get my new laptop, I am so excited to take my first dip in the OS X pool.

fury
10-15-2008, 08:48 PM
Theoretically 480, but in practice, I've never seen it do more than 160 (20 megabytes a second). It just wasn't designed for the kinds of high speed throughput that people expect from hard drives, cameras, and the like.

ChuckleBrother
10-15-2008, 09:05 PM

I am not that good, but I am working on it. have played less than 3 years, and I am a 20.9 index, 22 handicap at our course. We keep an extra set for visitors also. Our extra set of irons is my moms old Ping eye 2's. Those are classic, so they are not for sale. I also kept my Yes! Tiffany putter. That one could come back into the rotation. I have had the same set of irons for almost 2 years, but I have gone through a few drivers, putters, hybrids and fairway woods. What putters can you not part with? I tried the new Cameron Fastback and Squareback last week-great feel, but I am more accurate with my Spider Monza.
