View Full Version : Official Custom Firmware Request Thread

It was discovered the Mac generated IPSW files are not compatible with PC's. Therefore, requests are no longer being taken. Sorry.
Yesterday I created a custom IPSW for Dave as he is using a PC, and since then I've gotten a few requests from others so I thought a thread for requests would be a good idea. Anybody who is using a PC (WinPwn 2.1 currently unreleased), unable/not willing/nervous to use Pwnage can make use of this thread. Listed below is what you need to specify for a request.
Device Type: V1 iPhone, iPhone 3G, V1 iPod touch (V2 Touch not supported)
Firmware Version: 2.0, 2.0.1, 2.0.2, 2.1 (2.1 recommended)
Activation: If you are a legit AT&T customer, you do not need this.
Unlock: State whether or not your device will be unlocked.
Custom Packages: Any Cydia packages you would like pre-installed
Custom Boot/Recovery Logos: Stock or custom (link to if the latter)
Root Partition Size: If you don't know what this means, skip it.
Firmware files are large - each around 250 MB - so they can't be emailed or uploaded to typical file sharing sites. If you do a request for somebody, you can upload the file to GigaSize.com (http://www.gigasize.com/), TransferBigFiles.com (http://www.transferbigfiles.com/) or any other method which is available and then link to it. Also, if you are going to do somebody's request, say so here before you do it so two people don't end up doing the same one.
Once you have your firmware, follow these instructions to use it.
1) Enter DFU Mode
We will use DFU to Restore the device. Note that it must be in DFU, NOT Recovery Mode. Exact timing is key here, so a timer is suggested. While following these procedures, have your device attached to your computer via USB.
• Shut down the device.
• Once the screen goes blanks, wait 5 seconds.
• Hold the power and home buttons for 10 seconds.
• Release power button, hold home for 10 seconds.
Once in DFU, iTunes will tell you that the phone is in Recovery Mode (iTunes says Recovery for both modes) and your screen will be black, as if the phone is off. If you see a USB cord pointing towards the iTunes icon, you are in Recovery Mode, not DFU. You must restore and start over.
2) Once in DFU, open iTunes if it is not already. If you are using a Mac, hold Option and press Restore. If you are a PC, hold Shift and press Restore. In the file browser that appears, navigate to your custom IPSW file and select it. Let the device restore.

The firmware I made for Dave is 2.1, has custom logos, does not activate or unlock, is for the V1 iPhone only, has a 500 MB root partition, and installs Cydia, Installer, BossPrefs, and Categories. Download it here (http://www.f).
I'm trying to use this firmware, but keep getting an error when trying to restore. You just shift/restore with this file, right? I'm on Vista, btw.

Great thread Lincoln. I'm sure alot of Windows users will find it useful.

thank you for this thread. I would be in great debt to anyone that can help me aquire a jailbrake firmware for my 3g 2.1 phone on a windows xp machine. Do I need to tell you now what I want on it..? Cydia, winterboard and erica's makeitmine.
Actually if I can just get the firmware, I can add those extras myself thru cydia, right? I just want to jailbrake. I'm a legit AT&T customer.
Thanks in advance.

Same here except I'm on vista. I'm going to jailbreak as soon as winpwn is released. I have been waiting for 2.1 so I didn't get JB and the have to start over a week later.

Here is the 2.1 firmware for iPhone 3G. Does not activate nor unlock. Cydia pre-installed.
NB: Also does not update baseband firmware. 2.02 firmware has baseband version 2.08.07. I didn't notice any apparent anomalies during my usage over the weekend.
I ended up updating my baseband to the current version 2.11.07 this morning however.

I hate to be a party pooper, but I can't get Linc's firmware to work at all. It appears to be whole and uncorrupt, I'm definitely getting my phone into DFU mode (dark, blank screen, all the signs... I timed with a stopwatch to the second), but I keep getting error 1600. I've tried uninstalling iTunes 8.0 and going back to 7.7 like some iPod Touch guides suggest, but it didn't change anything.
My stock firmware is still there and no harm done, but I really wish I could get this thing working. [Sigh]... I guess I'll have to wait until I can build my own?

You need to get the phone into DFU mode before it will accept a pwned firmware from iTunes. But, like I said above, I'm doing that and it's still not going through. So who knows...
Has anyone had success with a pre-generated ipsw on Windows yet?
Lincoln
09-15-2008, 11:16 AM
Dave, I'm thinking the firmware I gave you is a bad egg. Is it possible that PwnageTool-generated images aren't Windows compatible? I sincerely doubt it, but it's possible the Dev Team purposefully made it that way. I'll look into it.

I'll take your FW into work tonight and try to do it in OSX. If it works, that should answer our questions.

Okay, I contacted the Dev Team and they said there's nothing that prevents PwnageTool iamges from working with Windows or iTunes 8 so long as you are performing a DFU Restore, so that firmware was bad for some reason. Download link removed, a fresh version will come after OJ's.

Yeah I'm getting the same thing. I'm definitely in DFU mode (because when I repair my Apple Mobile Device installer, it tells me in the system tray the first time it detects a phone in DFU mode... even says DFU) but I'm still getting error 1600. [shrug]
Here's a question about DFU, though: I thought once you go into DFU mode, you HAVE to restore your phone to make it work again. I'm not needing to do that. Am I in some sort of pseudo-DFU mode? It has all the signs of being in DFU, but... [sigh]
Lincoln
09-15-2008, 01:44 PM
Weird, for sure.. Yeah, both DFU and Recovery require you to Restore before you can do anything. You might want to check in on the Dev Team's IRC room: irc://irc.osx86.hu/iphone
For some reason, GigaSize continuously gives me a "Bad Request" error when I attempt to upload a firmware. Therefore, I'm uploading the files to a personal server for the time being. These files will be removed tomorrow (possibly re-uploaded to GigaSize, if I can get it to work) so grab them ASAP after I post them.

I've had five requests so far - including the one I'm redoing for Dave - and they're all uploaded across different servers, so I've thrown together a webpage that lists usernames - clicking on the name takes you to the direct download link. It'll be up within the next two hours or so.

Custom fiirmwares are the easiest and most efficient way to jailbreak devices. Not to mention the only way to jailbreak devices running the 2.0 or later firmwares.

As of now, I am not positive that these files will work. The Dev Team claims that an IPSW is an IPSW and that this will work, so we'll find out.

Sorry I'm not sure why the IPSW file I posted via GigaShare didn't work. Before I uploaded the file, I actually restored my phone using that exact IPSW file.
Regarding the baseband updates, I un-checked that option in Pwnage to activate the phone and update the baseband. My tests throughout the weekend mirrored what others were experiencing on 2.1, i.e. no contacts/keyboard lag, better 3G reception and better battery life.
After seeing this post (http://sleepers.net/news/2008/09/14/iphone-fw-21-rules/), I decided restore my phone again with a stock IPSW file to update the baseband. I didn't do it via Pwnage, for no good reason other than if the update borked on me, it'd be squarely on Apple's shoulders.
I quickpwn'd soon after than restored once again using the customized ISPW. My phone restored from backup without issues, the baseband remained the updated version and the day's testing shows nothing perceivably different than what I've encountered over the weekend.

Firmwares for the 1st Generation iPhone should begin with iPhone1,1 and firmwares for the 3G should begin with iPhone 1,2.

hey just wondering, were you on the official 2.1 before you tried to restore to the pwned 2.1? or were you going straight to it from 2.0.2 or something?

Ok, well apparently, you can do it with iTunes 7.7 like I had read, I just didn't read enough. Following these instructions on a PC should get you a jailbroken iPhone:

12. On the right side, scroll down and click on the MobileInstallation.framework folder.
13. Select the MobileInstallation file, and click "Delete from Device".
But I accidentally deleted the entired MobileInstallation.framework folder. I need this back, and I'd really rather not restore. Can anyone with a 2.1 jailbreak pleeeease send me theirs? Do not post it here, obviously, but please PM me. Thanks.

i know it may seem like a pain, but in the time it'd take to wait for someone to read this who is already on 2.1 (not likely cause they probably wouldnt read this thread), you could have probably restored.

Just to reiterate, a custom firmware will get you nowhere using Windows at this point. I didn't even end up using the one that Linc made me... I just made a new one with Quickpwn. There didn't appear to be any way to avoid that step and go right to the premade FW anyway.
So while his time and effort are greatly appreciated, there really is no reason to download and try to use them. You will get error 1600 with iTunes.
