Just get yourself a MAC :D

I just pwned 2.1! Got worried because when I went into DFU mode iTunes said it didn't recognize my phone and wouldn't restore.. Oh snap! But I killed iTunes, reopened it, and it restored the Jailbreak firmware just fine. Restoring my data now!

EDIT: My 2.1 iPhone 3g is officially pwned!I have only used quickpwn on the PC, and I liked that it does not require iTunes as part of its process. It was fast and painles... and I can't wait for the new version to be made available!

I have become accustomed to using WinSCP to modify my phone's system sounds. If apple would create an improved sounds settings page that lets you choose between custom system sounds - and then let people sell system sound files in the appstore - my need for jailbreaking might be greatly diminished.

Just jailbroke my 3G on 2.1 . Everything went well. Installed all my apps via Cydia, no problems. Upgraded my iTunes to 8.0 (on my PC where all my music is stored) .Rebooted phone, and I am stuck on the silver Apple logo, and the phone is giving two short vibrations every 10 seconds or so.Been like that for 10 minutes or so.

I wouldn't mind having a macbook air. Maybe I would get into developing for the iPhone. That would at least be fun if not profitable.

Phone seems to switch itself off every five mins or so, then straight back onto the silver apple logo.

I have a question? Did they disable back ups in iTunes? After I pwned my phone I haven't seen it back up yet. It might be that I have been connecting it in a short amount of time but I haven't seen it once. Does anyone know?

have you previously jailbroken your phone?? if you havent you have to put it in DFU and have pwnagetool prepare it for you, if you have then change the USB port that you have the computer connected to and make sure its in restore not DFU mode.

I used quickpwn today after restoring to 2.1 after a previous jailbreak.

Everything says succesful and I get the pineapple logo when I boot phone, but there is no cydia or installer icon.

After this happened the first time, I restored, redownloaded quickpwn and got the same result. Does anyone have any ideas?

take a look at this:
http://www.iphonehacks.com/2008/09/firmare21hacked.html

Download iPhone firmware 2.1 for iPhone 3g (http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-5198.20080909.K3294/iPhone1,2_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw) or download iPhone firmware 2.1 for 1st generation iPhone using this link (http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-5202.20080909.gkbEj/iPhone1,1_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw).

Install iTunes 8.

Update iPhone with iTunes and make sure it is activated!

Uninstall iTunes 8.

Uninstall Apple Mobile Device Support (From Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel)

Install itunes v7.7.* (http://www.filehippo.com/download_itunes/) <-- all versions of itunes are there.

Download Quickpwn with the correct 2.1 bundle from this link (http://xpwn.co.uk/quickpwn-2.1-2g-3g.rar).

Run quickpwn, select your iPhone1,2_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw or iPhone1,1_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw.

You can select Cydia and Installer and logos if you wish.

When it is finished the iPhone will reboot. Cydia and Installer will NOT be visible.

Download TotalCommander (http://xpwn.co.uk/tcmd704a.exe).

Download t-pot addon (http://xpwn.co.uk/T-PoT.1.1.zip).

Install TotalCommander and in the left pane navigate to T-PoT.1.1.zip and click on it. It will install t-pot automatically.

Download the mobileinstallation patch (http://www.sendspace.com/file/pcrxy6).

Use Totalcommander to install patched mobileinstallation to /System/Library/PrivateFrameWorks/MobileInstallation.framework ... clickon the dropdown box [-\-] top left and select network neighbourhood then t-pot. Remeber to back up your original mobileinstallation first! Drag the file from the right pane to the left, not from windows explorer to TotalCOmmander.

Still in TotalCommander delete /private/var/mobile/Library/Caches/com.apple.mobile.installation.plist

Reboot the phone. This should jailbreak your iPhone.

Install “CacheDel” from cydia. Run this after each Cydia update or app install. Soon, Cydia, itself will be updated and this step will no longer be necessary.

maybe that is your problem?

According to this windows step-by-step

http://www.iphonehacks.com/2008/09/firmare21hacked.html

the absence of Cydia and Installer are not unusual, and more work (total commander? t-pot?) is required to get them to appear. I don't know if the MAC method requires these extra steps or not...

Edit - Oops, I see SeanWes got there first (while I was editing). DOH!

I will wait for something a bit less convoluted before I re-jailbreak my phone.

SO what is the big difference in using quick v pwntool? I used pwntool and it erases everything, then does a full restore of all apps/media/photos.

I appreciate the reply. If anyone knows what I can do, it would be appreciated.

I solved my problem. Hopefully this will help anyone else that has this issuse.

On my previous jailbreak, I had Cydia and Installer hidden with poof(I used appflow to open them when needed). So when I choose to restore all the data on the Iphone, I guess it still had a record of them as hidden, so I had no way to access them.

What I did was this. After the restore on the Iphone software from itunes after it reboots, I did not restore the Data to the previously recognized Iphone. I left I tunes open to that part, then did the jailbreak. After that was done Cydia and Installer were there.

Then I downloaded Boss Prefs. After that I go back to Itunes and go ahead and restore the previous backup to the iphone. After the sync, Cydia and Installer are again gone. I opened Boss Prefs, went to poof and both were shown to be hidden. I changed to on, and now they are there.

I just wanted to write all of this, just in case anyone else has the same problem.

I created this for Dave, but anybody else is welcome to it. It's a 2.1 IPSW with stock boot/recovery logos, no activation, no unlock, and it installs BossPrefs and Categories along with Installer and Cydia.

It's both Mac & PC compatible, but it won't unlock. I can create one for you that will unlock if you'd like, or you can do it yourself with PwnageTool for Mac. (http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/49988701/pwnagetool-and-quickpwn-for-2-1-firmware)

so Lincoln I can use that custom firmware and jailbreak with qwkpwn? I'm have a 3g running 2.1 and a window vista PC. Is this version strictly for macs and us PC users need to wait a few more days?

Lincoln
09-14-2008, 08:18 AM
It will work with PCs and you wouldn't need QuickPwn (just shift+restore in iTunes) but the firmware I linked to is for V1 iPhones only - it won't work with 3G's. However, I'm waiting for the okay to make a thread for custom firmware requests for people who are Windows users or aren't able/willing to use Pwnage.

kenneth

ok I understand. It shouldn't be to much longer before they release winpwn or something along those lines for the PC. That's a great idea for a thread by the way. Thanks for the response.

I received a phone back from a person that I sold to months ago because some how it did not recognize the SIM card. It was a unlocked/jailbroken 1.4 V! iPhone. I am trying to restore it and go about unlocking/jailbreaking it again. Do I restore using 1.1.4 or the original software that the phone was bought with which was 1.0. Do I have to use the version iTunes that was available back then? How can I go about undating it to 2.1 and unlocking it?

Thanks.

I keep getting an error;

"Check to make sure your SIM is inserted in your iPhone and that it's not PIN-locked." I am using an AT&T SIM card. The phone is originally jailbroken/unlocked 1.1.4. Never updated to 2.0.

Any help would be great!
