Should I have 'push" on or off? Will off save battery life? Will off slow down performance? Thanks for your time!

Unless you have a need for it, I would leave it off. Seems right now it doesn't work that welll anyway and it will help with battery life. You can set your email to check every 15min-30min-hourly or manual. Which ever will not affect performance.

keeping it off should help battery life too.

I have mine set up for every 15 minutes...... but I don't have problems with battery life.

I use my 3G a LOT during the day. I have 3 email accounts (IMAP, MobileMe, and Corporate Exchange) and keep them all on 15 minute fetch. Push just drains the battery too much (along with Bluetooth)

We will see how 2.1 affects this.

I have push enabled with my exchange account and fetch set at 1 hr for my gmail account. I have no problems with my battery life and push works seamlessly with my exchange account. I am a big fan of push email.

All I have is my Yahoo email and so I leave push on all the time. I have no problems with my battery life.

I had "fetch" set to hourly, but it would massacre my battery so bad, that I was down to 20% by midafternoon. I now have push enabled and set up a Yahoo account and am just peachy with the battery life.

IMO push is the way to go if your email supports it. Think about it, if you have fetch set the phone is going to try to fetch whether you have mail or not. If it comes back with nothing you just wasted battery for nothing. With push you will only stress the battery when there are results to be found!!!

Ok, let the beatings on this opinon begin!!!

No need to bash your opinion, it's yours and everyone is entitled to one. I actually agree that Push is the way to go for email, I miss not having that feature (had it on my BB). But I mentioned before, i would rather have an iPhone that works than an iPhone that has Push, but crashes all the time.

Amen, I am getting so tired of rebooting my phone just so my email works. I swear my sleep button is going to fall off.

Interesting....with my 2G unit, I turned off 'push' and have experienced an improvement in battery lifetime. So...doing a little bit of searching I found the following:

If you go the the topmost level of bookmarks in iPhone Safari you'll find a bookmark labeled "iPhone User Guide". Under the "setting" category there is "Fetch New Data". Reading this reveals that both sides are right: "...turn Push off to suspend delivery of email and other information, or to conserve battery life" and at the bottom of the page, "To conserve battery life, fetch less frequently".

no need for beatings....only peace and tranquility!
