I think that they are doing this b/c they dont want 1,000,000+ people downloading it all at the same time... But iPhone users should get it first, because even though we payed $200, Apple still gets a cut from AT&T for every iPhone on the network... iPhone users are pretty much the ones who finance the software updates, even though they are an Computer and iPod, the iPod touch that people buy dont really give enough money to Apple to fund all the people that have to work on an update... so i understand why they are... but IPHONE SHOULD GET THE UPDATE FIRST then worry about the others

It usually does. If you can't do it early Friday, I would wait until late evening or Saturday morning to update. It can be real frustrating trying to get thru and get nothing for hours.:angry:

The ALL NEW touches have the Nike receiver built into the unit...The iPhone 3g never had the receiver for the nike + built into it....And even if they did release all new phones with the receiver built into it then millions of iPhone users would complain about it and want refunds...now MMS and Voice dial.....that is another story...

While I sure as heck want copy and paste, right now my biggest priority is for the lag to go away. I have lag problems across the board, from texting, to phone use, to opening apps. The phone one in particular is a concern since if I needed to call during an urgent situation, I'd be out of luck! It lagged yesterday during the maps program too. I always reset, but it comes right back. Right now it's slight (i.e. I can make and receive calls normally) , but the other day when I was texting, it was like watching paint dry. and another time I couldn't make outbound calls to save my life-it just hung in the air literally just as I would get the person on the line. then I couldn't get the screen back, but the phone call was still in progress-just really unusable occurrences. But when things are running normal, it's great and the best phone I've ever had, so can't wait until Friday!!

I think I'm the only one in this thread so far to mention Nike+. I'm not sure how this qualifies as "everyone" or do you see a special version of this thread with more posts than I do?

The Nike+ kit could have relied on Bluetooth to transmit data between the shoe pod and the receiver, and the iPhone could have made use of this with a software update since it already has Bluetooth built in. Regardless, Gizmodo has now confirmed (http://gizmodo.com/5047450/confirmed-nike%252B-only-works-with-2nd-gen-ipod-touch-not-iphone-or-1st-gen-itouch) that the receiver does use some different wireless standard that requires a special radio that is built in to the new iPod Touch.

I would have like to see Nike+ as well. But...

What I really don't get is why people feel they need to whine about not getting Copy & Paste, Video Recording, MMS, etc, when we have been complaining about what this update fixes for two months.

Because we have been complaining about the lack of MMS and copy and paste since the release of V1 and still no resolution. I'm considering checking out the Blackberry Bold. There is no excuse for functionality on even the most basic cellphone to not be on the iphone a year after release.

I couldn't agree more. When I got my 3g I forgot shot the lack of A2DP and got a plantronics stereo headset and have been waiting to use it...still waiting. Again don't get me wrong I'm as excited about this update as the next person but from what I've read on this forum the stuff is there come on apple. And I agree in I would also like to know more of what this update does without having to wait for someone to get it before I do and tell what it does. And just to be the devils advocate for a second, if everyone is as on edge about this update as I am I'm just waitig for us to find out this update does nothing that we all want it to do, A2DP, push, c & p, and I'm sure more I'm forgetting, sorry everyone for the rant.

I want turn by turn directions. We can easily fit the entire 3D map system on the iphone considering how much space it has. I can get video recording via jailbreaking. But why Apple doesn't take advantage of the iphone platform for the features that are lacking is beyond me. I feel like Kevio, not mad, but a little surprised and disappointed.

I don't believe that we will see A2DP or C&P in this update. I've been waiting for both since the first iDay. If Apple does decide to add it it will be a major revision such as 3.0 etc..

For a 'Let's Rock' gathering, Jobs probably didn't wan't to undermine a new product launch with "and we fixed a previously launched products' shortcomings with a software update!" much more than he felt he had to.

I think they want to completely stabilize the 3G before they dump more core and processing hogs on it like Turn by Turn, and other complex issues to the 3G such as copy & paste. Otherwise instead of whining about why we don't have it yet, everyone will whine about, why it doesn't work or keeps crashing when in use.

My personal opinion is that Apple is waiting to see how 2.1 goes over and then, will release a 2.1.x that will include these other little updates.

I mean, we saw 2.0.1 and 2.0.2 in a matter of 3-5 weeks after the release of 2.0.

There's a guy up here @ works who supposedly has the connections on what they're releasing a few weeks before Apple actually releases updates. But according to him this update is mainly for the 3g users. It will have bug fixes, turn by turn directions for GPS, & copy/paste but only for the 3g. Us v1 users will get nothing :( other than bug fixes. We will not get copy/paste. Again, I'm not sure how reliable his sources are but that's what he says. I hope he's wrong. I guess we'll have to wait til Friday.

So I was looking over at Wired and their review of the iTouch 2.1 software and I noticed a before and after shot of the iPod on the Touch. It now has a Search button as the last button at buttom before More. I don't have that on my phone so I'm hoping that's a new addition that they plan on adding to the iPhone as well. I've been wanting a search for my music for a while now.

You know I didn't even think about that..lol. I think once he told me it was an update mainly for the 3g users & that 3g users were getting getting copy & paste I stopped thinking straight. But then I thought maybe they built the 3g w/something that handled copy & paste that the v1 didn't.

Actually copy and paste will be a 3G only feature because the v1 iPhone doesn't have the copy and paste hardware chip installed.... Seriously though guys, if it comes both devices will get it. I also agree with the person above who believe's it won't come until 3.0 with the next iPhone. I hope it comes before then but I'm not hopeful.

As for turn by turn GPS directions and Push Notifications. Neither of these features would work on the iPod so no reason to mention them at this effect. With WiFi being the only way a Touch can get online and WiFi being disabled when the device is put asleep, push is completely pointless. No GPS hardware, no turn by turn obviously.

The GPS updates in the beta were related to the API and no mention of that being removed so they should be there for 3G users only until a developer makes an app to use them, we won't see any difference. Here is to hoping for Tom Tom to appear in the App Store soon.

As for Push Notification, that was removed from the last beta of 2.1 that Apple put out. My theory on this is that 2.1 was originally planned to come out later in September but due to all the issues with the phone they dropped this out of the firmware to concentrate on getting the fixes out ASAP. We'll then see another firmware this month or in the first week or two of the next month as a minor update with push added back in so Apple can keep their September promise or close to it.

I'm really looking forward to push notifications though as it should add to the overall experience of the device quite a bit if devs use it right.

If you can have access to this site Friday, someone will post when it is released. I am off Friday and will start early trying to get it. If no one beats me to it, I will post a thread. You are correct about high traffic. If one can't get the update early, I would suggest waiting until late evening as the traffic should be lighter at that time.

Decent battery life and less lag would keep me happy for a couple months too. The only other real annoyance I have these days is the occasional "this message has not been downloaded from server" when using e-mail.

On that note, I have to say that I just upgraded to the 16gb 3G yesterday, from my 8gb V1. Everything has gone swimmingly so far. Right now, I'm transferring all my music over to the new one.

Got to play around with the 3G a bit here in the Cincinnati area and, I'll admit, I was actually quite surprised how much faster it is than edge. Seems faster than 2 times as fast.

Oh yeah, never anything less than 4 bars, and usually it's 5. The 3G is working great!!!!

It also doesn't hurt that I only paid $100 for the phone. I had 2, $100 dollar Best Buy gift certificates, sitting on my computer desk, for the last 5 months! Finally had a good use for them.

Now I won't feel like I wasted much money when I buy the next REAL upgraded Iphone.

Im here in the UK too, i am so sure that the update will be little more than bug fixes (with the inclusion of Genius) that i actually jailbroke my iphone 3g yesterday. Im confident i wont have to unjailbreak to update. Ill be happy to wait. Butttt if im wrong, ill have to restore and update to 2.1 today as i cant wait for Cut and Paste.

GPS - i dont think we will get turn by turn in this release, but how about maps turning so when you turn the map always faces up? Know what i mean? lol

You ain't kidding.

I'm like a kid waiting for his parents to be awake on Christmas morning. I just want this update, so I can put it to the test. I have not had a plethora of issues, but enough to make me want the update, as well as to see how the greater community receives it. Apple certainly has severely damaged my long held understanding and trust of their software and products (which before this were usually perfect, and without serious incidents or issues). Lets hope they pulled up their bootstraps, and got the job done right. I think with 2.1, if everything starts working right, and it fixed all the major bugs (without introducing equally annoying ones) that the arguments and frustration in the 3G forum should diminish quickly.

EVERYONE is relying on 2.1 so if its a flop things are going to get crazy. i dont have alot of issues either but i want to update and then jailbreak. so im going to update now and see how it goes.

I have been on the fence about JBing. But, if this update does fix most of the glitches that are out there....let me know how you JB goes, and what you used if you don't mind. I have never JBroke, but would be interested in seeing some of the benefits of JBing.

Well, they will hopefully be shorter AFTER the firmware install.:smile: That's what 2.1 is supposed to correct.

They are, much much faster. and the syncing is smarter too, only syncs what has been changed and not all of it like before.

That makes NO sense. Did you back up anytime in the recent past? Something ain;t right, and I am pretty sure that isn't the phones fault.

Anyway, get 2.1 on that phone, and then try again. if you keep having the problem, get all the details about your computer, and speak with Apple.

I haven't backed up in weeks. =\ it would always take 1-2 hours, so i skipped it cause i never had time.

i'm guessing 2.1 will fix that, but im a jb addict, so i'm gonna wait.

So far, after downloading 4-5 apps, updated 2 existing apps, took some off, taking pictures, added a couple contacts,etc. etc., I tried a backup/synch....took no more than 2 minutes with 2.1. It never took more than 5 or so before, so I saw a slight difference, but none the less MUCH improved.
