Itunes & Ringtones and Downloads

I am a new 3g Iphone user and was wondering if there is anyway to download ringtonetones without having to buy the song from ITubes?

Addidtionally, I have been trying to download songs from my itune to my iphone without success. Is it only songs you get from ITunes that you can download????
