Okay I don't know what's going on with this device, but it seems like every other day my phone crashes and I have to restore. The crash seems to be happening when I am installing new apps from the app store on the iPhone. Also it takes an unusually long amount of time to back up. I have the original iPhone with firmware 2.1, and it is still giving me problems. I don't know what to do. I went into the AT&T store the other day and showed the people there that it just wouldn't turn on. It just sat on the startup screen, the silver apple, for a really long time and never boots up. Until that is I go in and restore it. And I'm tired of restoring the phone 2 or 3 times a week and I have stopped syncing music and files because it just takes so long to back up. Please someone help. Is there anything I can do to stop this from happening?

How many pages of apps do you have?

I would completely remove all the apps from the phone and install them through iTunes. I have heard several people having problems with buying apps on the phone. Do all your purchasing and updating on iTunes and then just sync it over.

I have the same problem right now it is on the black screen with the apple logo on it. I can't hook it up to the computer nothing works. What do i need to do? I have 4 1/2 pages on my home screen and only about 3 pages are apple apps.

Have you tried a hard reset?

yeah this is pritty fightening. The only thing that worked for me was to press and hold the sleep and home buttons and at the same time connect to iTunes (not easy). As soon as you connect release the sleep button. This will hopefully enable the iTunes connection icon on your iPhone screen and iTunes will recognize your iPhone. You'll then have to recover from a back up.
You may have to try a few times!

No, that is not too many. The phone is capable of holding 9 pages of info. with 16 spaces per page.

Weeeeeell, it might be too many apps. Obviously, it shouldn't be, but the current firmware apparently has some real issues if you tip the application map too heavily:

And, as stated, only install apps through iTunes, never though the iPhone appstore. It just doesn't work right now.

I have read this a lot throughout the forum. This is odd because I do more of the opposite on a V1 and have had no problems. Weird.

That leads to an interesting question. How many people with crashing problems are on a 3G vs. a V1?

I am on V1 also. Try leaving the apple icon on until the battery runs out and try again. Otherwise it might have to go back to apple:frown:

I just got back from apple and got it fixed. With the phone off plug it in with the home held down. If that don't work plug it in and then hold the home down.

so your on 2.0.1? i was just thinking about upgrading too 2.0.1... i'm still on 1.1.3.. i guess i shouldn't update than i was actully thinking of going from 1.1.3- 2.0.1... good thing i seen this, i hate restoring.. i haven't had to restore in 6 months...i've had a couple minor problems but they can be fixed without restoring... all i can suggest too you is go back too 1.1.4 or 1.1.3

do you or did you have the app "diamond twister"??? after several weeks of problems, many many restores, 3 trips to the apple store, and one exchange, it seems I've narrowed it down to this app. if you read the reviews, it shows many people had the same problem with it.
Since I've gotten rid of it, I still have problems updating through the app store, but can ok with iTunes, but before it didn't matter if it was the app store or iTunes, it would crash if I tried to update or download any app if diamond twister was on my phone.

I was downloading the gigotron app from the phone. It's a music app tells you what shows are comming up. And I didn't have the diamond twister app.

My phone is experiencing the same problem. Its first generation. I was updating a program that allows you to share your computer files with the iPhone. Airshare might be the name.
I'm about to try restoring....which ive been putting off because I don't want to lose my pictures.

usually that is one thing I was able to do if I had to restore, when you plug in your phone to the computer, it should at least still read your phone as a "camera" device, and you can click in there and copy your pictures to your computer before you put your phone in restore mode
