We haven't heard much about the upcoming software update. There was more talk a few weeks ago, but nothing new has been announced or rumored the way updates usually are.

Apple does have an event coming up on September 9th. Anyone think they will use this as an opportunity to announce a new update or at least the coming of an update?

We should expect any of the following features: Bug fixes, the ability for apps to run "in the background," turn by turn directions for GPS, and a REAL attempt this time to improve reception.

I dont know if well ever see apps run in the background. I sure hope so, but I don't think it will be anytime soon if at all.

I put "in the background" in quotations because it's another way of referring to this: http://www.iphoneatlas.com/2008/08/01/iphone-21-beta-2-why-push-matters/

maybe its going to be on the 9th in time for that special event thing..
but then again, it looks like an ipod refresh..

i posted this somewhere else and a developer responded and reminded me that apple had taken out the push notification feature out of their newest seed, so who knows when it will become available, hopefully soon.

I'm sure that Apple is receiving a ton of complaints from all over the world in regards to the bugginess of the 2.0 software. I would imagine that Apple is working to come out with a firmware fix very soon, hopefully in time for the iPod announcement (if that is what it ends up being).

I can't wait for firmware 2.1. I've been checking google for new updates on it pretty much every other day and most of the sites have the same old information about push being taken out.

Though it is a small pain, did you know you can type 1 letter and then move the cursor back behind that letter and it types normal?

This helps out even though its only happened once to me since the new update a couple of weeks ago

I jailbroke it with 2.0.2 because I can't sit around and wait until 2.1 comes out and THEN wait for that to be jailbroken too. I really wanted my cycorder and winterboard, two things that ironically should have been provided by Jobs himself.

Sadly yes. But it really doesn't take long unless you have a crazy amount of third party apps to reinstall.

If past history is any indication(2.0.1-2.0.2) itunes will do a backup of the phone, completely erase it, install the new firmware, and then put everything back on the phone.
So you aren't going to lose anything.

However when 2.1 does come out with a jailbroken version, then you really will lose all your info since you can't restore from a backup. That is of course if you want to jailbreak in the first place.

kenneth
09-07-2008, 03:41 AM
yea I will be losing everything when I jailBreak 2.1. What about all of my contacts? Do I need to write all of them down or is there a way that I can keep them?

No, things like contacts, emails, and bookmarks, because you sync them with other programs (such as outlook, firefox, etc.), will be returned to your phone with the next sync. However, things like high scores in apps, recent call list, and any other data saved in apps will not be restored since you are not restoring from backup where it stores all this info.

Regarding contacts, do you use a program that manages these sort of things?

kenneth
09-07-2008, 05:06 PM
no I don't have any sort of program that does that... I guess I better find one or find away to transfer them to my sim.

Not quite.... This is what I did with Monkeyball. Install Appbackup, save the progress, SSH and save the progress file to your PC, restore, reinstall Monkeyball, reinstall Appbackup, save monkeyball with it, SSH and replace the backup file with the one one you saved prior to the upgrade and there you have all the progress back!:2cool:

this is the second time I wrote all this but right before I could hit the post button, 2.0.2's safari crashed on me...

How could 2.1 EVER be any worse than this horse **** firmware we've got now!? This phone is now as unstable as the hp Ipaq EVER was. And that was 2003-4.

I'm getting the update the very second it comes out. Apple has really screwed this phone up in the two updates. Morons.

Here's the article...

iPhone Firmware 2.1 Could Also be Released on Sept 9, Could Include Surprise New Features

http://www.iphonehacks.com/images/08-Sept/iphone-v21.jpg
When I had reported about Apple's special event on September 9 (http://www.iphonehacks.com/2008/09/special-event.html), I had mentioned that the event will be more focused towards music and that its widely speculated that Apple will be releasing new iPod nanos and a new iPod Touch at the event.
I had also mentioned that there are no news or rumors to suggest that there will be any specific announcements at the event. But looks like we could be in for a surprise.
Ars Technica has just reported that based on their sources in Apple, iPhone firmware 2.1 (http://www.iphonehacks.com/iphone_firmware_21/) might also be released on September 9 which could include some surprise new features.

We have already seen four beta versions of 2.1 (first (http://www.iphonehacks.com/2008/07/firmware-21beta.html), second (http://www.iphonehacks.com/2008/07/sdk-2-1-beta2.html), third (http://www.iphonehacks.com/2008/08/firmware21beta3.html), fourth (http://www.iphonehacks.com/2008/08/firmware21beta4.html)) released to developers of the iPhone Developer Program, the last beta version released three weeks back.
The beta versions of iPhone firmware 2.1 (http://www.iphonehacks.com/iphone_firmware_21/) had revealed entries for several commands the firmware does not currently support, including cutting, copying and pasting which indicated that we could see the Copy and Paste feature soon.
Apple had also included new Core Location features which indicates that turn-by-turn GPS on iPhone 3G (http://www.iphonehacks.com/iphone_3g/) could become a reality as it can reportedly track your direction and the speed at which you are traveling.
The other interesting development was Apple pulling out its Push Notification Service APIs (http://www.iphonehacks.com/2008/08/push-notificatn.html) in the fourth beta version of iPhone firmware 2.1 for "further development" that would have allowed to process notifications in the background.
Ars Technica has reported that as per their sources, other than the speculations mentioned above, there were some parts to iPhone firmware 2.1 that were specifically removed from beta versions that were seeded to developers to keep them secret from the world.
The fact that the last beta version of firmware 2.1 was released three weeks back (August 17, 2008) also indicates it could well have been declared the Gold Master in anticipation of the upcoming release.

The surprise element has definitely got me excited and I am looking forward to Apple's special event on September 9th but share the concern raised by Ars Technica that it also means there will be features released in firmware 2.1 that have not been widely tested outside of Apple.
I guess most would like to see issues such as dropped calls (http://www.iphonehacks.com/2008/08/3g-fix-details.html), slow iPhone syncs (http://www.iphonehacks.com/2008/09/slowiphonesyncs.html), iPhone apps crashing issues (http://www.iphonehacks.com/2008/08/app-crashes-fix.html), 3G reception issues (http://www.iphonehacks.com/2008/08/3g-reception.html), Apple Logo Screen of Death problem (http://www.iphonehacks.com/2008/08/screen-of-death.html) are resolved in the latest iPhone firmware with new features just as a bonus.
If the news of the iPhone firmware 2.1 has got you worried on the iPhone Hacking (http://www.iphonehacks.com/) front, then you may breathe easy as the iPhone Dev Team (http://www.iphonehacks.com/iphone_dev_team/) had informed us that their Pwnage Tool (http://www.iphonehacks.com/2008/08/pwnagetool-2031.html) works with iPhone firmware 2.1 (tested with the beta 1) (http://www.iphonehacks.com/2008/07/firmware21pwned.html) though we will need to see if it works with the release version of the latest iPhone firmware.
What would you like to see in iPhone firmware 2.1?

waiting with as much patience as one can possibly have... tired of the "this version of the iPhone software (2.0.2) is the current version" message though
