View Full Version : iPhone 3G a breakthrough?

Was the iPhone 3G really a breakthrough? When iPhone 3G came out, following with the $200 decreasing in price, but having to buy it with the contract, some things that Apple thought would satisfy a customer would fail when people came to really know the iPhone 3G itself. Not saying that any customers weren't satisfied, but still many things that iPhone and iPhone 3G can't do even the simplest things that the most basic cell phone can do, including, video recording and MMS texting. While iPhone 3G still has the capabilities of GPS, it can't configure turn-by-turn navigation, of all, its just tracking and maps, no real necessities. Also no self-removable battery, although it is possible by voiding your warranty, but no soldering required! So will Apple be able to accomplish these by a software update? Or will we just have to risk getting these iPhone-needs by Jailbreaking? I don't see what real changes were between the iPhone and iPhone 3G, besides the 3G, residing complaints about the 3G being slow. But overall, are iPhones really "at least 5-years ahead of any cell phone out there," as what Steve Jobs stated in the January 2007 keynote. Although there are many pros and cons about the iPhone and iPhone 3G, I believe the iPhone is still a breakthrough cellular phone.:2cool:

I think this post is like 2 months old. Everyone has been saying that stuff for awhile.
IMO the 3g was not a breakthrough...just an improvement.
The first iPhone was a breakthrough

somempeople will never be happy. They will ALWAYS see the world's glass half empty. I do think the phone is a pioneer of sorts. No question, really. However, five years I'm not sure about. Remember the ipaq? Wasn't that five years ago? Windows operating system, too. Of course that phone operationally speaking, sucked balls. 15 reboots a day, minimum. The idea was the exact same as the iPhone, though. It took five years just to get one to work! This iPhone runs so well that some people completley forget about "reboots" and post on this site about new issues on their phone that can fixed with simply rebooting...
Does it really matter if apstore is the only place for apps? Cydia and installer are the way to go. If you can't or don't want to jailbrake, it's your problem, not apples. The fact that all this is POSSIBLE is what makes the iPhone special. just having the ability to do things and stretch the borders of the iPhone makes this the greatest phone yet! Like in life, you must make it happen.

They should have named it the Ameriphone.

the problem with the iPhone being able I me jailbroken is that most governments won't use it as it can be hacked.

Apple has stated that it is suppose to go against BB which the government uses, that is one reason so many BB are sold.

I'm sure Apple would love to get that market.

Most blackberry users will never use a touchscreen device. I wonder how the thunder (storm) will do when it comes out.

I agree with this.

I used to be a BB user and one reason I came to the iPhone was because I missed the touchscreen and RIM is taking to long to get the device out.

Jailbreak is the way to go you will get the most out of your iPhone. I had a BB and hated the little non touch screen I type faster on my iPhone than I did with my BB also had a tilt still love my iPhone.

From what I read on blackberry forums, a lot of users like the physical keyboard. Maybe it is just iphone envy.

I am quite used to the on screen keyboard from the iphone. I never used a bb, but have used a treo for some time. I still don't like the apple predictive text software...

I agree. I've been using 3G with my Samsung Blackjack for almost two years now. That's why I didn't buy the first iPhone--I would have to slow down from 3G to EDGE, which (if you have used 3G) would be like going back to the stone age. :(

I wouldn't trust that when traveling or when out-and-about. Unless it was just sitting on my desk, charging, I would be afraid of it "breaking off" at the connector. It's looks too fragile. It doesn't even "hug" or wrap around the bottom of the device for a more stable union.

Then again, if I were at my desk, I wouldn't need to use such as charger.

Yeah, take a look at Chris Pirillo's videos, he's shown that thing hooked up to his iPhone 3g... and i use the term "hooked up" very ... loosely... because that's what it was. A couple of jiggles and it fell out.

btw, you don't need to de-quote an image to save bandwidth. If it's referred to on the page ten times, it still only downloads it once.

And, echoing all the other sentiments in the thread, the iPhone 3G is not a breakthrough...compared to the iPhone.

Compared to other phones? No doubt about it.
