So I finally broke down and decided to try the iphone. I have been a dedicated blackberry user for years now, but I guess there's nothing wrong with trying something new!

So yeah, some questions...
Which apps do you recommed/can't live without?
Is there a mod to change the background of the home (icon) screen on the 3g?
Which "mods" do I definitely need to do?

Pandora Radio and Last.fm

Is there a mod to change the background of the home (icon) screen on the 3g?

a stock iphone is unable to do this. You can "ipwn" or "jailbreak" your phone to gain access to its file system, and, thus, alter its appearance. There is a thread dedicated to this subject here (http://www.everythingicafe.com/forum/iphone-modifications/devs-official-2-0-2-jailbreak-guide-with-pics-35229.html).

see above.

Thanks; looking into doing this now.

Get "iHour". Everyhour, the background changes to a predetermed photo. Always changing and staying fresh!

Also check out the "retro dialer.". It looks like an old 1980's payphone keypad! Cool.

as a scientist, I happen to love hpvoyageur's HP calculator. Back in the day, HP defined what a top quality calculator was all about (IMHO), and this app gives the user access to 4 of these golden oldies (HP11C, HP12C, HP15C or HP16C). The interface is stunning and it operates just like my real HP15C. Orders-of-magnitude better than the stock calculator.

I think it would be helpful to know what apps you used most on your blackberry and then people can tell you the equivalent on your iphone, if it exists.

For games, billies frontier is pretty cool, and if you like to try and figure out a song playing in the background somewhere, a good app is Shazam or midomi, gFlahcards is nice if your still in school, plenty of preloaded subjects on it. One final one is photogene for altering and playing around with you photos.

I use AirMe a lot. I take photos with it and it uploads directly to my Flickr account with a bunch of tags including the weather and your GPS location!

If you use Facebook, there's an app for that.
If you use Twitter, I'm using Twittelator.
I like to stream videos from vSNAX and Trueveo.
Stitcher is a great app for streaming podcasts.
I get my news from the Associated Press app.
Of course, Pandora is great. I hope last.fm clears up its buffering load times.
I use Now Playing for box office showtimes and movie trailers.
I use Distance Meter to track my long walks.
For blogging, I have a Wordpress app and the Lifecast app for Blogger.
I use CheckPlease for quick tipping.
I like Palringo for instant messaging.
I'm not sure what kind of games you like. I'm guessing not racing games (which I would say Asphalt 4 is the best). Other games I like are Sudoku Unlimited, Platinum Soliataire, Tap Tap Revenge and the free version of Hanoi.

Brooke, by the way, if that is your picture in your profile - I like it! :laugh2:
