Something tells me he meant "lost"
Can you give us a few more details? Perhaps we can get them back...?

Pretty sure Webby meant lost. Shoot us some more info to see if we can help. Are they gone from itunes, the phone, both?

If he meant lost, then it happened to me once also. Just all of a sudden my whole ipod section was cleared.
However, Simplify media saved the day. I was able to stream my itunes library from my pc for the rest of the day till I got baack and resync'd. This app works really well.

How is the sound quality on that? does it sound like you're on hold and music coming over the phone?
I had that program, but deleted it because I was having problems with syncing and updating. I'm not sure if it was the cause but I didn't want to take chances.
I've got two ipod nano's (4gb, 8gb) and my iphone 3G, if I lose my songs I deserve it.

Oops. I meant LOST! LMAO I do love my music files though. I was cleaning out my macbook and i deleted the library of music I had on my computer, but I didn't know it would be deleted from my iphone too. How do I get the music files back?

with great difficulty.
if it happened recently, a good data recovery service can most likely still recover them from your hard drive. If you go this route, use your computer as little as possible between now and then, or you may overwrite the files.
It would be a lot easier (and less expensive) if you could transfer them from alternate locations (such as other computers or ipods).

Just retreive your music files from your latest backup of you laptop. You do perform regular backups, don't you?
Once they are back on your laptop, you should be fine.

I am guessing NO if he is asking, and panicking.
This reminds me...I need to do a back up....it's been a while, myself (even though 90% of my stuff is covered).
NEVER, EVER do nto have a backup for your music and files. A lesson I learned a couple times when I was younger. Never repeated that mistake since.

i would go as far as to say never, ever go without TWO backups. in different locations.
redundancy is the only way to insure data... and even that isn't 100%.

I set up a NAS subsystem at home and backup my traditional data and music to one of the drives, and backup my photographs to two drives for redundancy (I'm a semi-professional photographer). I have about 4 Terabytes of storage, spread out over five drives.
As you can probably tell, I've been "burned" before (actually, twice) early in my career, so backups are a regular best practice at my house.

Back when I was a PC user (not that long ago), I ran WIndows off of a SCSI Drive (30 gig). I then stored ALL my files on a slave Western Digital 200 gig HD (internal). I just accessed and saved ALL files onto the HD, but made sure to keep windows, and it's crappy software away from it. I then backed up on my myBook WD external storage drive (200gig). I still use that external HD today. Since I have a MacBookPro now, i no longer have the internal backup.

That's always a good idea, Tex.... to seperate your system and your data on different drives. I do this (so far as to reroute "My Documents," "Desktop", "Start Menu"... pretty much ANYTHING user-generated to another drive) and just image my system drive every so often (after installing new programs). Then you just have to be diligent in archiving your data. It gets harder and harder every year.
At this point, I'm just going to keep buying hard drives.

you guys should try Time Machine.
Well... at least Tex should.

Do you really like Time Machine Hip? I haven't heard any stellar reviews on it as of yet. I have an Airport Extreme with a 500 GB external USB-ed to it and I can access it remotely using WAP and so far it works great.

i got a Time Machine a few weeks ago and I love it. i have a sizable music collection and am unable to keep everything on my laptop, especially when movie files are included. i transferred everything from my external HD to my Time Capsule and can now access my entire library without having to plug in anything.

Tex, I have a 32 gb SCSI drive which is my C:drive. Than I have a 120 gb IDE drive that I put everything but my OS on. On top of that I have another 120 gb USB external drive that's only used to backup my files. I learned along time ago to make multiple back ups.

Now I am paranoid. I do not have a backup drive. I have a MacBook, so I am going to investigate the Time Machine or Capsule or whatever it is called.
Do I need Airport Express and Time Capsule? It seems like I only need the Time Capsule.

It would be the time capsule. These are pretty pricy though. I have the AEBS and just use an external HD as my backup device. Works well with time machine.
But yes, you really should have some sort of backup plan. I have never had to use it yet(where is some wood) but it only takes one time to make it all worth it. I back up once a week weather I need it or not. Same day I shower.:tounge:

OK. So is Time Capsule a piece hardware/HD and Time Machine is software or a process? I see the little Time Machine icon on the top of my MacBook screen, but I was not really sure how to use it.
Now I really should have posted all this in the Macbook section.

Yes, Time Capsule is the HD. It is available in 2 size capacities of which I forget the storage. I believe it is 500 MB and 1 trigabite(is that the right word?). Anyway, Time Machine is the software the works with Capsule to do the backups.
One of the main reasons I didn't go with the Capsule besides price is because it wants to do a backup hourly-daily-monthly. When the Capsule becomes full, it deletes the oldest backup. But this is just more backup than most people need. Of course you can turn Time Machine off to prevent unwanted backups.

Koko, all you REALLY need to make time machine backups is an External hard drive... which i think you have. All you should have to do is plug it in, open time machine, and tell it to start backing up. Now, if you want to back up WIRELESSLY, then you'll need something like an Airport Extreme or Time Capsule.

But, the first Time Capsule backup can take up to two days, because it is "over-the-air". So backing up to an external Hard Drive is better.

oh, and binks, i think Time Machine works very well... it takes the monotony out of doing backups, and allows me to restore my system easily without having to worry about lost data or apps. That hardware support for it has been a little disappointing to me though... Time Capsule and AirPort utility have had some problems at times.
Anyway, overall i think time machine is a great thing.

there is a way around that. If you do the initial backup connected via Ethernet, it will actually go faster than a USB connection. Once you do the initial backup, the incremental ones are small enough to do wirelessly without having to wait hours or days.
However (as i have mentioned before), i don't recommend going with the time capsule... i've had too many problems with its firmware updates to recommend it to anyone as a viable backup solution. If you want to go wireless, i think the Airport Extreme with an External hard drive attached is the best approach... although smokinSRT is having problems with that setup at the moment...

Yeah I love Time Machine. So simple and easy to use. Just tell it when and where and your off. I've never changed any settings since I originally set it up.

No, it was surprisingly good. Not only does the program jump from song to song fast (on 3g), the sound quality is pretty good. I'm no audiophile though so I can't get into details but I really didn't notice any degradation.
