Ok,
So I have read numerous reviews on the NEW 3G iPhone and can't decide if it's really worth purchasing. I love my first generation iPhone right now....but oh the possibilities with the 3G. Do I really NEED the 3G networking and is it really that much faster than the ancient Edge technology? What about the reception problems that were have said to be fixed with the most recent software update through iTunes? Has that update really made a difference?
I guess what I'm getting at, is that I would like the opinion of the people that have upgraded form the first generation to the 3G. What makes the 3G a worthy competetor of the first generation?
Thanks!!

I think the biggest issue first is the 3G coverage in the area where you are most often - how is it according to AT&T's map for your location?

My opinion is that the 3g is a better phone. If you're not worried about "unlocking" the phone to another carrier, then obviously 3g is your only choice. Technically speaking, it's a superior phone. Don't even hesitate. Why would you get a used v1 phone , anyway, as opposed to a brand new baby!?

Looks good from where I am. I am noticing a trend....3G is only available in larger cities, than let's say...the border of Wisconsin and Illinois!

Thanks for your opinion! I do agree that the 3G seems to be superior than any other phone out there. I wasn't going to purchase a V1 iphone over the 3G...I currently have the first gen and am looking to upgrade.

I actually don't think that the 3G iPhone is enough of a major upgrade from a first-generation iPhone to justify the additional costs for the data plan and adding text messages since 200 are no longer included with each voice plan. Unless 3G and GPS are absolutely essential for you, the first-generation iPhone can do almost everything the 3G iPhone can, with better battery life and a less scratch-prone back to boot. If you like your current iPhone and it's working out perfectly for you now, I don't think you need to upgrade at all. I did because I'm a geek and Apple fan, but I know I didn't *need* to and I do miss my first-generation iPhone from time to time (I still can't bring myself to put it up for sale, though I could use the cash).

Another thing to consider is that by buying a 3G now at the subsidized price of 199/299... you're locked out of any promotions for 18 months. So if the next iPhone comes out next year, you may not be eligible for the cheapie price.
Personally, I didn't feel the 3G gave me enough incentive to upgrade from an already marvelous phone that does 95% of what the 3G does. That added to reported reception and battery issues is enough to make me happy to be a V1 owner.

Between macgirl and Dave everything that I could tell you has been said. I am very happy that I stuck with the V1. No problems that what seems like most 3G owners are having. We don't know how the next phone will be handled, but as Dave said a lot of people might not be eligible for the next phone if it is released in June/July of next year. With the 3G not being a subsidized phone, you may have to wait 18 months to upgrade.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the data plan thing. 3G speeds are great if you can get them, but $240 extra over the life of the contract is hard for me to justify, personally.

If I were a V1 owner, I would not have made the upgrade. A friend of mine about a month ago was on the verge of going out and getting the 3G, but I talked him out of it, because as a V1 owner, there's no real big upside to upgrading at this point.
I'm new from Sprint, so I wanted the 3G. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely think this is the best device I have bought, possibly ever.

If I didn't already have the V1 I would have defiantly got the 3G despite it's problems. Of course I wouldn't have known about them until it was too late.:tounge:
There a times when 3G would be really nice(if it would work) but the extra cost can't justify the real need.
Now if a new phone comes out next year, I will get it. Hopefully Apple has learned their lesson and the next phone will have few if any problems.
