Looks like 2.0.2 should fix everyone's issues.

My question is why doesn't Apple force this update on everyone?

Very interesting find. Seems to make sense but Apple can't force anyone to update if they choose not to. One problem is that some are having good reception with 2.0 or even 2.0.1 and are afraid by upgrading it might get worse. In other words if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Another problem is with the jailbreak community. Maybe when 2.0.2 can be jailbroke then more will update.

And if you read the article, it very possible that you might be one of the very few iPhone 3g owners in the area, therefore not battling a bunch of other people for a more powerful signal.
In truth, it seems that those that aren't having problems will once they update, that those that are having problems won't once they update.
This will probably continue until 90% of all 3g iPhone users are updated. Then everything should even out.
Meanwhile, I have no problems with my 2.0 V1 iPhone.
