I got my iphone 3g on aug. 8th, and when i got it i did not knotice anything wrong. A week later i discovered a light bleed coming from the top right of the lcd, like when i have the phone on the table in front of me i can see light coming out (im not talking about between the chrome bezel but the actual lcd screen). Also on the right side the chrome is raised at the center and the glass looks like it dips down in the center. The other side is smooth when i run my finger across, but when i move it to the right its raised and stuff gets in there. Should i return it? and are they doing refurbs?

Run like the wind man!!! Just kidding, sounds like you have a defective phone that they will give you no problem returning. They seem very sensitive to cosmetic issues. As far as a refurb goes, Apple claims there are no refurbs in the market on the 3g. You will get a plain white box that they claim is used to reduce their cost on replacment phones. Everything should be fine. It not like you are the first or last phone that has been or will be replaced.

I would try to return it for an exchange.

Did you buy it at Apple or AT&T?

If you do decide to return it, you will have a better chance of getting a replacement at an Apple store, than at an AT&T store.

FYI you wont get ANYTHING done at an at&t store once the new iPhone leaves their store you MUST go to apple for any warranty

Save yourself the headache and dont bother with at&t store either go to the apple store or call 800-my iPhone

Sounds like you had similar problems that I had with my iPhone. What week is your phone (4 & 5th digits of the serial number)? Seems like week 30 phones were riddled with manufacturing problems. Apple probably kept the child labor up way into the night, to get as many phones made for release day.

Ok just got back from the apple store, got my replacement with no troubles, was done in 5min, walked out the store in the mall, pressed the lock button on top, the damn thing was stuck inside the phone, they gave me a defective replacement lol. So i went back and they replaced it again, this time everything is looking good exept for a little backlight bleed, which i dont think will casue any problems, any ways to answer your question ravman the fourth and fifth digits are 24...

24? Wow, that's surprising. I would've expected no less than 32.

Let me get this right? You got your faulty phone replaced with a second faulty phone (power switch)? But you now have a third phone with light bleeding? Dude, take it back. The light leakage is a very common problem, my last phone was replaced because of that.

Is the 24 on the latest phone you have?

When I got my replacement, it was a week 33. If you do replace your phone again, make sure you can get the highest week number possible. It seems like as time goes by, the physical problems are getting fixed. I have absolutely no light leakage on my new phone at all.

EDIT: Didn't you take your first phone back due to light bleeding?

Yeah 3rd phone does have backlight issue again on uper right corner or glass, can this damage my phone? its not by the chrome or any thing but right below where the glass and black plastic meet, like underneath, its not bad but, would you?

Is everyone sure that the 4th and 5th digits are the week that your iPhone was produced? I bought mine on July 11th and the 4th and 5th digits are 27.

Personally yes I would. I paid $299 for my phone, and am tied into a 2 year plan. So I expect a perfect phone.

As someone in the nerd bar said to me once: "These phones are hand built, so what do you expect? A phone built by a machine will be perfect.".

Based on his remarks. A Rolls Royce should be a pile of rubbish, because it is hand built. Yet a Chevy should be perfectly built, because it's built by a robot.

yeah I'm going back up at 7 cause the new one also has light emmiting from the chrome bezel, which I know that dust can get In under the screen, it rediculous honestly, also the genius said that apple sends them both refurbs and new ones for swapouts, and he can't tell if it's new or refurb!

Yes, positive bill. I, too, bought my 3G on 7/11 and I originally had a 27. I returned the following week to get a replacement and it is a 28.

The later the week number, the better chance you will have of getting a new phone. You have more than likely received a refurb. Like I said earlier. Check out as many phones as you need to, to see what the week number is.

Take your time, do not allow the nerd bar to rush you.

I went to the apple store yesterday and they replaced my 3G with one that shows the 4th and 5th digits of the serial # as 33. So then mine is new and not a refurb? Right?

well i went up there and the girl genius told me that their not supposed to switch them out for the light coming out of the chrome, i basically called bs on her and argued for a minute and i explained to her that it was caused from the thing not sitting on the gasket or w/e. finally had the girl go in the back and check the phone for light leaks...came back with a good one, got home and the damn thing has like a single leak, can barley even see it, also im having some stability issues. Such as when i go to my texts, my voicemail comes up and asks for password, also when i miss a call or text a red dot appears (ussually its a red dot with a white one in the middle). Did a hard reset and all is fine for now. Also on edge it wasent connecting to the internet, but all seems fine after the hard reset. Im not 100% happy but seriously this is rediculous, im not going to waste eny more of my time switching out phones for another bunk phone. Ill just wait 4 or 5 months and switch it out when i know ill get a good one. I honestly dont know if ill ever buy another first gen iphone
