Should I have left the battery run down until the Iphone shuts off before I fully charge it? I've been hearing rumors about it and I just wanna get a straight answer.

In any event, I didn't do it...would it be a waste of time to do it now???

No. Li-ion batteries should never be drained completely. You're thinking of Ni-Cad batteries, which suffer from the dreaded "memory effect."
