earpiece speaker stopped working

i've had my 2g iphone since july of 07, up until now everything has been working fine. since i've upgraded to 2.0.2 this thing has been acting strange. now my new problem is that if i use my earplugs that came with it, and then pull them out, the phone's earpiece doesnt work. the only way i can hear calls is if i put it on speaker phone, or plug the earplugs in. the only way to fix it is to restore firmware. what could be causing this?

Try cleaning out the earphone socket. Sometimes you can fix it by plugging and unplugging the headset a few times. Usually, it's just lint down in the socket.
