View Full Version : Don't drop your iPhone

I have been told that the iPhone was fragile and I have been told that the iPhone is strong enough to take a small beating.

I recently dropped my iPhone and have a mixed review. You can see for yourself in the pictures, it broke. It fell from about 3 feet onto the sidewalk. As soon as it slipped from my hands, I felt my heart stop.

I can't imagine why Apple didn't make these things a bit more resilient. The screen still works but the touch screen is a bit off whack. Maybe this is an sign for me to get a new 3G but I really can't imagine standing in a line for a new phone. Especially when I keep hearing that the 3G has so many issues. Waahh...What should I do?

If I were you I would just go buy a new 3G. The problems you're hearing about aren't just 3G's. Its the 3G and V1's on 2.0 and up, but its just some. My 3G has ZERO problems right now. *knocks on wood*

I can't imagine why Apple didn't make these things a bit more resilient.

That's a little hard to do when you have a phone thats has a full glass front, dont'cha think?

I don't even know if a case would have helped that drop. I feel for you, but you'll enjoy your new 3G iPhone.

My cousin just dropped her 3G and the glass shattered. I've dropped both my v1 and 3G numerous times and thankfully, no glass breaking. The first time I dropped my 3G was a about a month ago from about 6 feet up onto concrete and it had very minor scratches. I suppose I get lucky on the drop angle each time.

I think it's time to buy a case for my v1. I can be a real dumas$ sometimes and I am not going to take any chances

No, they will not. I can't blame them, it's not their fault I have a skill level of Dexterity -2

I can't imagine why Apple didn't make these things a bit more resilient.

Because then we'd all be moaning and complaining about the cheap-feeling plastic screen. The iPhone's screen is luxurious, but there is often a price to pay for luxury: You gotta be super careful with it.

I'm sorry about your misfortune. Hope it works out as painlessly as possible for you...

Poor you! There are a couple of options open to you, take it to an Apple store and pay for an exchange, that will cost you!
Buy a replacement touch screen and LCD (you need both as they are stuck together - $169) from Ebay and a 00 star screw driver and replace the screen yourself (that will take you many hours of nervous dismantling and if you have no dexterity or patience DO not do it - you will likely damage the metal back removing it and the ribbon cables are fragile)
Nearly done, pay someone to do the job for you, again Ebay...
Get the 3G and sell the 2G for spares on an auction site - they are fetching good money at the moment.

Sorry to hear about your phone! My 2g has been in an Agent 18 case since day one. I've dropped several times on tile (face up and face down) and I haven't broken it yet!

I say get a new 3g and hopefully all the issues will be worked out soon.

Wow reminds me that I still dont have a screen protector for my iPhone yet:gasp:
-The weird thing is that my iPhones screen doesnt scratch at all...Like normally with all my other elctronics that had a pretty nice screen(PSP, iPod Video, HTC phone, etc) the screens would scratch and fingerprint like crazy...
-but the iPhones screen is so resistant that with a few swipes with the microfiber cloth to the screen will remove any smudges, fingerprints, etc:laugh2:

Resiliency comes in two forms.

The glass screen is more resilient to scratching, but does break quite easily on a hard surface.

A plastic screen would be more resilient to dropping the phone, but look horrible without a screen protector after a few uses.

So which one would you ultimately want?

Me? The scratch resistant glass.

Sorry to see the damage.

The phone is pretty resilient overall, you just had the worst case scenario drop - flat on its face, so the glass took the brunt of the impact.

That really sucks, I hope if that ever happens to me my speck case will protect it.

That's the 50Cent edition of the iPhone coming soon and it also comes with G-unit sneakers.

*shrugs*

mine dropped in and out of case. Near the speaker have a couple ding marks, and the strip around the screen shows wear and tear ( nothing horrible just little scratches ) but my screen and never damaged one bit. hit the concrete one time and phone still works superb. i would say the structure is fine, you just got unlucky this time is all. sorry=(

Will Apple accept the shattered screen iPhones for exchanges???They did for me. Well, they weren't going to. They were going to charge me $250 for the exchange and I wanted to use my $100 refund. Luckily I couldn't find my refund form before I went in that time, so I went back to my car to get it. I finally found it in my glove compartment. Luckily again I didn't need the refund form because the new guy I went to gave me a replacement iPhone free since I did take such good care of the other one until I broke the screen. He said if I broke another one I'd have to pay the $250 fee. If they say you have to pay, then leave and come back later. Some geniuses are nicer than others. The phone was still under warranty by the way. Is yours?

I used to work for a bank architect. There is no such thing as bullet proof glass. It's bullet resistant. Certain guns will still shoot right through BR glass. Mythbusters did a segment on it.

BR glass is not glass and it's not clear enough for a display. Also, in order for it to be bullet resistant, it has to be over an inch thick.

They replaced my phone when the glass shattered. You may want to read my post in the 3g forum. Do a search for shattered glass. You do not have to wait in line if you make an appointment with a genius. Pick your time and go in. Read my thread first though. If you remain calm and cooperative with them and appeal to their sense of fair play it really helps.

Did you have a cover on this phone when it dropped? If so be sure to take the phone in with the case on it. If you didn't you are probably not going to get it replaced if it has obviously been dropped without the case on it.

Hey it's worth a try!

I am currently on my second Iphone 3G Due to a Drop from about 2 feet out of my Truck. I guess it hit the pavement just right and completely shattered the Screen. Well To make a long story short I Contacted my Home Owners Insurance (through USAA) and told them what happened and The agent said All They needed was a Quote on How much it would cost to fix and a picture of the Phone. Well apple said Phone couldnt be Fixed and I sent Pictures and 2 days later I had a Brand New Iphone 3G. I have Extra Electronic Coverage but My agent said that It wasnt needed because its concidered a Phone which is an everyday Electronic Devise so that might be something for all of you to check up on cause it helped me alot when i was dying for my iphone and worrying about how i was going to Get another one without the wife killing me.

USAA rules. I consider myself lucky to be eligible to be covered by them.
