connected to wifi but no webpages...

yesterday i was at the hospital using safari. all of the sudden it asked if i wanted to join the hospitals network. i accepted it and the wifi signal was on rather than 3G. Well when i went to a web link the the blue bar breezed by fast up top but stayed on the same web page that i was on when before accepting wifi. in other words its connected but won't advance to websites. whats the deal?

connected and authenticated can be two different things.

they may have what appears to be an open network but are matching MAC addresses ... (your unique Ethernet ID) so you could be connected but not have authority to use it.

There are other possibilities but this should give you the idea that a connection is not always something workable.

Exactly what I was going to say. Sometimes when I get the little pop up to join a network, I join. I get full bars, but when I go to a webpage, it asks for a user id and a password. It drives me nuts. Why can't they just have it locked? :wink:
