A scientific method of finding the root-cause of the Iphone 3G Reception problems, and......

A Short Corse that will guide You all the way from the Iphone3G´s antenna,
step by step, even inside chips, understanding the physics of each component.

Everything will be outlined in detail from the electromagnetic field strenght
hitting the antenna and all the way through all analog RF circuitry, functions,
(even inside the Infineon tranceiver chip)to the AD-conversion
and through each Layer 1 of signal processing step inside the Infineon Baseband Chip.

Finally, when We have fully understood all significant mechanisms, We will
outline the root-causes of the problem using a number of hypothesis.
The Hypothesis be tested using: Information, Observations, measurements.
Finally they would be ranked by likelyhood and subjected to a scintific review:

-The Hypothesis will either be Rejected or Proved. http://forum.macworld.se/style_emoticons/default/yeahbaby.gif Leaving just a few !

Finally we "know" what is wrong....

More information for those interested, (only receiver part is covered):

PART 1: Front-end of Receiver for Band 1 WCDMA/HSPA (3G/Turbo3G)

Closest to the antenna is some form of connection, it is likely to be
a test-pad or test-connector (could be SPDTtype). Next is a "micro-
stripline", the first circuit is the: TriQuint "Tritium PA Duplexer" module:
http://www.triquint.com/prodserv/markets/handset/tritium.cfm (http://www.triquint.com/prodserv/markets/handset/tritium.cfm)
This contains the duplexer based on a very innovative technology:
"BAW/FBAR" technology, it separates the "TX" from the "RX" path of the
antenna by two very sharp "bandpass filters". (It also includes a "PA" in
"InGaP HBT" technology). Click link below for similar Data sheet:
http://www.triquint.com/prodserv/more_info/?prod_id=948&page_id=423 (http://www.triquint.com/prodserv/more_info/?prod_id=948&page_id=423)
This is custom made for Iphone 3G and is designed for different "bands"
it is internally "matched" to the leading individual "tranceiver chips" on the
market. In Iphone3G´s case it is done upon order to "match" the Infineon
"RF ports". The Infineon chip is: PMB 6952 "SMARTi3GE Tranceiver":

More about AlN (Aluminium Nitride) "BAW resonators" these are very complex
to manufacture and requires individual "ion beam milling" in the process.
Read about the "7 deadly sins" in what could go wrong whit "AlN BAW":

...................more to come later. Attached some pictures of BAW resonators,
The first is only 1mm x1mm, the other is Impedance vs. frequency (unloaded):

This pictures from the PCB is of to low resolution:

Pic 1 Possible flexible antenna connection ? Dont Know, does not recognice the solution.

Pic 2 With highest possibility a connector for production test (could be of SPDT type),
this is a possible cause of error, because they sometimes can be a little tricky.

-Help me find better photos !

Full pictures (3,4) also attached for clearity.
Also interesting all circuits are identified.

Simon
