Create a Personal Server

What I want to do is to access file from where I am to a server at my house. I read "Geek to Live: Set up a person, home SSH server" (http://lifehacker.com/software/home-server/geek-to-live--set-up-a-personal-home-ssh-server-205090.php) Is it really this easy to do this on a mac? But what if I need to connect to my server from a PC?
Also, is there a way I can use Airport Extreme and connect a external HD to it then access information that way?
