I'm about 50% downloaded, I'll let you know whats up when I'm done installing. It says bug fixes again so I doubt it's anything noticeable, hopefully improves the lag etc. but we'll see.

This is what iPhone Hacks (http://www.iphonehacks.com/2008/08/firmware202news.html) is reporting:

Update 2:

Based on initial reports, iPhone users have observed the following so far:

Couple of iPhone users have suggested that they are seeing better 3G reception.
Netshare (http://www.iphonehacks.com/2008/08/iphone-netshare.html) still works.
Some users are reporting that everything seems snappier.

Was the AT&T logo in quotes on the phone before?

Like this? 'AT&T' I thought I remember the bars and then the logo immediately like this... lllll AT&T
Now it looks like this lllll 'AT&T'

Dunno. Just wondering.

Update. A friend with 2.0.1 just said yes, the logo on 2.0.1 is NOT quoted.
Wonder what pertinence this has, if any.

Contacts still lag as soon as I open them up. But, it seems to respond better when I choose a specific contact to call.

Haven't sent a text yet, but my text lag was few and far between.

Haven't really tried anything else.

I really don't understand why my phone does this....whenever a new update has come up, I try to install it regularly, right (through itunes-->summary-->update), but it always throws up error 6. If I download the file to my computer than shift+click on restore and select the new file, it works fine. WHY?

This time, I forgot to download the file, so it keeps giving me error 6 messages. Can anyone help me out with this/upload the file?

Thanks...

Rebooting the phone after an update may change things. Just like updates on a computer, sometimes you have to restart.

ehhh... my contacts still take a second to pop up, but they are "scrollable" right away as opposed to being stuck in place for a few seconds more. Texts don't seem any different and I am now officially for the first time ever, getting 2 bars instead of 1 bar in my house.

As a new iPhone user (3G was my first iPhone), why doesn't Apple enumerate the bug fixes and other modifications/enhancements when releasing a update? How can we, as smart consumers, put up with that? Does Apple omit this from Mac and other product updates, as well?

Most other software companies tell their customers what fixes are included, especially the big company in the Pacific northwest.

No noticable difference here. Same crappy 3G. I upgraded about 3 weeks ago, so I am considering returning to my V1.

Question for those of you familiar with Apple, will these folks stand behind their product and fix this even if it takes a recall to repair or replace these phones? Or are we stuck paying 15 bucks more per month for twice as fast that can't find a signal? (until the inevitable lawsuit comes at least)

Edit: The least they could do is quit running that "twice as fast" commercial, I wanna throw my phone at the t.v. everytime I see it!

I believe Apple will do everything it takes not to perform a recall. I have had items recalled by Apple before, so it is not unheard of, but this would be a massive recall....so I think they're gonna exhaust a lot of options first.

For sure. I don't fault them for trying to fix it with updates. But at the end of the day if updates don't fix it will they spend the millions necessary to preserve their (and AT&T's) reputation? Hopefully AT&T is leaning on them pretty hard behind the scenes.

Had a little lag before the update, and i was only able to launch a particular game app once and it crashed everytime since (Cannon), now after the update there is no lag at all and the game launches everytime...so far,.. have to wait and see if this is a permenent fix over time though.

I don't know if it's a coincidence but I've had more dropped calls today (post-update) than I ever have since I owned the 3G. My girlfriend said that she didn't even make it to my voicemail on several attempts and it just cut her off. Also, I had a few dropped calls from my roommate and best friend too. I NEVER experienced any of these issues prior to this update. Anyone else in this boat?

Feels "Snappier" and also noticed increased speed of 3G.

Texting keeps up with as fast as I can type, but only time will tell.

Manual enable/disable of 3G still takes some time 10sec from 3G to EDGE and 5sec from EDGE to 3G sometimes with "No Service" still.

As for Signal Strenght unable to say at this time, since I have 5 bars at Home and Work, but will test it in Irving where I have noticed alot of dropped calls.

that might be AT&T related (something to do with their network)

I don't think my reception has improved, although I'm not sure if that was part of the fix or not. I bounce from 2 to 4 bars of 3G here at work depending on whether I put the phone on my desk or hold it (4 on the desk, 2 in my hand).

I notice absolutely zero changes in this update. Same lag on calendar, text, same random bars for 3G, same sync problems in google contacts (that probably is not the phone anyhow)...

I honestly think these guys are working on the deeper stuff, whatever that may be. I doubt they are focusing on things that are rather inconveniences at the moment. You know the things on the surface, the things we notice. There has to be a TON of stuff that needs to be fixed that we have no clue about but are more important than lagging SMS and stuff.... just my 0.02

Who knows what bug fixes these updates are addressing. They might not be visual bugs to all of us users, but they could be some pretty big bugs. You have no way of knowing. And wouldnt you rather your phone work the way it should than not all just because it didnt give you a "visual" bug fix?

You'll be in for a long wait. That'll be a Verizon exclusive for at least a year.

you're prbly thinking of the touchscreen Bberry 'Thunder' which is all Verizon.

Try plugging the phone in to a USB cable or rebooting it. I had the same thing right after I upgraded but the signal showed up after I plugged it in.

FlwrPwer, it's weird crap like that happening to people's phones that makes us hesitate. Plus not everyone in the world has high speed internet available. I'm 3 miles outside a college town and I don't. So a 24 hour download for an update that may actually hurt the performance of my Version 1 phone is a shaky proposition.

Didn't DL 2.0.1. On the fence about this one...

This happened to me, but not after an update. It just happened. I had 3G service and then I had no service, not even Edge.

The only thing that worked was a full restore of the phone as new.

Not sure really know what your talking about but ok..

You're right. I didn't know what I was talking about. I confused it with the new touchscreen model that is supposed to be a direct competitor to the iPhone. Thanks for the clarification.

I don't have the 3G but do have to say I am pretty disappointed in Apple. I am pretty new to their products and really want to be a fan but this is a real PR nightmare.
Even before the 3G launch I said I was going to stick with the V1. Of course a week after the the 3G was released I was beginning to slip and thinking of getting it. But the more I read on the forums the easier it was to make the decision not to get it.
This phone was simply not ready for release. It needed more R&D.

I just read that. That is absolutely ridiculous. So what exactly are they working on in 2.1 then? Are we to assume that they released a 3G fix in a matter of days considering that we just recently heard about the Infineon chip issue? It's nonsense.

Well I can't even download the damned update. Never had this problem before but I keep getting error 3253 after about 210mb of download. Says it's a connectivity problem and something needs to be reset. The download goes to zero at that point and I have to start over, only to get the same result. Tried it at work and at home with the same error.

Same here! Mine froze and would not reboot. I went to Apple and they had to wipe everything then reload the software and told me to go home and reboot. When I did, it took forever and then did not load any of my music, movies, etc. Contacts and email went fine. But now it is stuck on the reboot page and will not let me access the synch page??!!

If you've got the Apple logo sitting there, try forcing it into restore mode again by holding the sleep and home buttons until the screen fades and then comes back, then let go of the sleep button until you see it go to the iTunes connection icon. iTunes will come up and tell you you need to restore it. Just let the phone sit there until it drops back to the Apple logo, and wait. That's what I did, and after a long, LONG time of waiting, it eventually did come back up to my home screen, and then I could sync my content back into the device.

Atlas
08-20-2008, 05:59 PM
Hmmm. Mine goes to the regular phone screen as if it was done synching but the computers iTunes page stays on the reboot page when my phone is highlighted in the list on the left. If I highlight music, app, movies they are all in iTunes, I just can't get to the page to set the synch preferences.

Honestly I was going to do this and I did it for a little bit...maybe a week after the 2.0 update came out.

I thought I was happy with my JB phone and I didn't want to pay for my apps. I was WRONG!

2.0 is way better than 1.1.4,and 2.0 is lightyears ahead of a JB phone. I have about 20 apps that i use regularly on my phone and I paid for 3 of them, totaling just under $8.

You really have to think of how many more people have these phones now becuase of the cheaper price....more phones, more problems and more complainers on these boards. The only problem I have is text lag. This isn't everytime but every once and a while and its easy to fix.

I think 2.0.2 has been the worst update for me yet. 3G doesn't work 99% of the timem even when it does its not nearly as fast as it was before the 2.0.2 update.

I have to hard reset my iPhone at least twice a day now. EXTREMELY annoying and I can barely stand the phone anymore.

Simple tasks such as navigating, and adding a new contact are extremely delayed as much as 6 seconds before it moves to the next screen when before it was instantaniously.

ok, so I got a text message to update my phone. So being that I had some time to do so, I did it. Before on 2.0.1 I had shotty 3G service and well, I took the plunge and did the update. Im pleased to report, I have no 3G service on my iphone. Well it has full bars, which I did before, but now EDGE service is way fast than 3G being that 3G does not work at all. even though 3G logo is showing. So now I dont know what to do. I'm not pleased at all. I think I might take a trip to the apple store to replace it, if they will do so.

Having just bought my iPhone the first part of this week, 2.0.2 is my first software upgrade. In the process of the update iTunes gave an error message and said it would have to close. Well, the iPhone froze, and after getting it and iTunes up again, iTunes said the phone would have to be reset to the factory original settings before it could be sync. Well, to make a long story short I didn't think that 2.0.2 would be loaded into the phone, but it shows that it did take the update. Everything seems to be working great.
This is my first iPhone, and without a doubt it is the best phone I've ever owned.

Not a new bug, but a bug none the less. I have had this happen from time to time. Not a constant problem, but more of one that seems to happen in sprits and doesn't last long.
The fix for me is to up the volume thru settings and not the switch on the side of the phone. Go figure? After I do this it will be weeks before it happens again.
