Yesterday I popped my SIM into a new 3G that my friend had purchased. I still have the older Edge network iPhone/Plan, but I was able to make calls on the 3G with my SIM. I was curious if this was using the 3G network, or if it uses the edge network? I didnt really have time to compare internet speeds between between the two phones so I'm unsure. really wondering if I can just buy a new 3G and not have to upgrade my plan for the additional $10/mo or whatever it is for the 3G network

3g doesn't cost extra. go to the phones section of att.com and look at all the non-smartphones that use the 3g network. my girlfriend had a crappy lg flip phone that was 3g enabled and her bill was no more than it was with the non-3g phone she had before. the extra cost is just a data plan, they made the iphone data plan the same as everyone elses (non-iphone). you need to realize that while you were paying $20 for data, everyone else was paying $40. 3g was around for over a year before the iphone 3g came out....

Voice calls go over the GSM network I'm afraid, even on 3G phones.

I would definitely look into that if I were you.

it's simple. The iphone 3G will always use the fastest data available to it. The V1 iphone data plan is not edge only, only the V1 iphone itself was edge only. AT&T doesn't have plans that are edge only versus edge and 3G, it always comes together.
So yes, that is a work-around to use the iphone 3G on the V1 iphone dataplan (while still getting 3G speeds).
although at&t may figure out a way to detect when people do that and switch them back over to the 3G plan.

All the pros are doing this. Why would I pay $35/blackberry prices when I can have the same thing for $20!
