So I am very new to smart phones and iPhone in particular. A friend of mine downloaded some maps to his phone for hiking. He is able to set GPS points on the map for reference points and then use his phone's GPS to locate his current position like a regular GPS device. Is there a way to do this with the iPhone manually or is there an app that will do it? This would be the most useful thing on my phone if possible. Thanks!!!

i'm confused. are you trying to use your GPS on your 3G? if so, why not just drop pins on the reference locations.

you might want to look into "offlineMaps".. for offline purposes.

however, it seems it crashes when used with GPS at the moment.

hope this helps.

Sorry for the confusion, hopefully this helps. I want to be able to download topographic trail maps hiking, biking and such. Then use the GPS function to track position on the maps. I will check the link and see if it helps but crashing when using GPS isn't to helpful. Thanks for the reply.
