Instead of paying $30 for the iPhone 3G dock, I saw that Apple offers a 3G insert for the univeral dock, which I already own. Guess which I went with?

The phone fits perfectly in the dock, but when it first connects, it displays the message that "this device is not for use..." and asks if I want to turn on Airplane mode!

Why should this happen? It seems to work well otherwise.

Because apple is greedy and they want you to spend the extra $30 on the 3G dock. People are reporting problems with the "older" universal docks and their 3G Iphones. I don't know which is compatible with which though.

Its because with almost all previous dock connectors, they used the firewire pins to charge the iPod/iPhone. The new iPhone 3G only works with chargers that supply power via the USB 5V pins. Why they did this, I do not know.
