Found a website that allows you to upload a song, select a portion of the song you'd like as a ringtone, add any effects, and download it in the iPhone format (M4R) - all for free. No software downloads needed.

Steps:

1. Go to www.makeownringtone.com

2. Click "Upload"

3. Choose a song on your computer

4. Select the portion of the song you'd like as a ringtone by moving the sliders.

5. On the File Format drop down menu, select "M4R". This is the Apple Ringtone format. I also recommend changing the Bitrate drop down to 160.

6. Press the "Make Ringtone" button.

7. Right click the download link and press "save link as" and save it to a directory. Click this file where you saved it, and it'll be ready to sync to your iPhone.

Super great find for those that don't have GarageBand.

I don't see why it wouldn't, but you may not have to click save link as, cause Mac will recognize the file.

I mean when you create a ringtone on the iTunes store itself. You have to pay $1 for each ringtone you create on iTunes. That's what I do.

It wouldn't let me convert it to AAC because it said it was protected by files or something..? I really need help on this. I purchased the song I want to make into a ringtone from the iTunes store and I just really want to do this for free to save myself some money! Help appreciated.

I did it that way before I found the website, the website allows you to listen to the file as you change the duration, and saves it directly as a ringtone file - there is no converting in iTunes. I'm not sure it works with protected files though.

all songs bought from itunes are protected. So you gotta find an unprotected song from another source in order to make it a ringtone.

Burn the song to a cd-rw and then you will be able to have a workable copy to make a ringtone.

iChristian, if you have a Mac with iLife '08, you can also use garageband to create ringtones (which i think is much more intuitive than the exploit in itunes). Here (http://www.everythingicafe.com/forum/mac-and-iphone/ringtones-with-garageband-free-and-easy-25858.html) is a tutorial i made a while ago for that.

You will still run into the file protection issue, but like dturner said, you can burn the protected song onto a CD, and re-import it into iTunes from the CD, and the protection will be gone.

Ok, thanks for the help guys. Much appreciated. I'll try and let you know how it goes. I'm usually good with everything else except this kind of stuff where you have to convert things and transfer them to files and things of that nature. Again, thanks for the help.
