i have an 8 gig iphone 3g today wile i was syncing i looked at the total capacity of my iphone and it was 7.04 has anyone had less than 8 or am i stupid

plus, when manufactures state the gig's of storage they round it off to 1000mb to form their so called gigs. But one actual gigabyte is 1024mb. So on an 8gb iphone you lose 24x8 or 192mb, and thats not including the software for the phone that's taking up room on the iphone's drive.

i read someone (i think it was on the microsoft site) that Hard Disk companies use a different way of measuring the space than windows does (and i guess OS X too)

you are correct. They only have to be within xx accuracy to be able to call it "xxGB"

There's several reasons for the discrepancy in the purported capacity and your final available space. All hard drives have this situation.

1. I over-wrote this one because it doesn't really apply to the iPhone.
2. There are 2 different ways to report GB. Basically it comes down to reporting in quantities of units that are binary compatible quantity at the current magnitude (GB) vs. simply reporting it in actual bytes. What happens is the "marketing" version uses the larger number, then the operating system uses the more precise number. At the GB level this results in about a 7% difference. The difference will increase to nearly 10% at the TB level. I'm waiting for a TB iPhone, me. I don't know what for, but I'll find some stuff to put on there, or at least brag about it a lot.
3. Formatting a drive actually takes up some space and reduces the actual available for files space on a drive (or persistent memory storage, as it were.) It's like, the walls in your house take up some space. You should tear down your walls, except in the bathroom.
4. Obviously the base software on the phone takes up some space. The firmware is over 200MB, evidently. I tried running my iPhone without any firmware. I decided the extra space wasn't worth it. Though it really does make a mighty fine paper weight, I don't really use paper any more, except for, uh, rest room applications.
5. Magic pixies from other dimensions store their annoying data on all computers. Not only does this take up space, but it slows down all computers. The data cannot be viewed, or erased directly. The only way to ever reclaim this space is to reformat the hard drive and start over. This is true.

Even your home computers drive is the same. The bigger the drive, the less GB you get. A 1TB drive gives you about 930 GB. It's always been this way.
