I bought my house when I was 20. Start by getting a gas card or something small and pay it off every month. That's a great way to build credit. I also had a car loan paid off and was well into paying on my newest car loan. Make timely payments on loans. Also have money saved for a rainy day. You should have enough to pay for one month of you bills. These practices will help you no matter what you get paid each week. You can get much further with good credit.

Witness

is it more important to get a good job and work hard or get a good degree and work less?

dcom
08-16-2008, 10:02 PM
Working hard will always be better than not working hard. A degree only shows that you can finish something. If you get a degree in an area related to the job you want, you have an advantage over someone who didn't get the same degree but it's not as important as you may think it is. Experience is the best thing to have and hard work will give you that.

kisstine
08-16-2008, 10:03 PM
is it more important to get a good job and work hard or get a good degree and work less?

Get a degree and then work hard.

...but whatever you do, choose a career path about which you are passionate. It's SO much easier to get up and go to work everyday when you're happy with what you're doing with your life.

FlwrPwer
08-16-2008, 10:08 PM
I think that getting a degree depends on what you plan to do with your life in the long run.

My undergraduate degree is in film/video production. Honestly, I did not need that degree if I had gone into filmmaking. For filmmaking, it's all about the experience you already have in that field. My degree meant nothing when it came to finding a job.

I am now a teacher. In that profession you have no choice but to have a degree. In fact, in NY, where I live, and in many places, you need to not only have an undergraduate degree, but also a Masters to be a teacher.

So it really depends on what you're going for which will determine if you should or should not get a degree.

Witness

thanks for your responses , u guys have been a sort of inspiration for me
what is the point of having an undergraduate degree if you dont use it?

A degree does several things, regardless of whether you use the course content you learn while getting it in your profession/everyday life. First of all, it keeps doors open. There ARE positions into which you will not be able to advance without a degree. You may not be planning on going that direction, but you never know where life will lead you. Second, college is a blast (and you'll have MORE THAN ENOUGH years of working in your life) - so if you can have fun AND set yourself up for a successful future... win/win. Third, it buys you time to figure out what you really want to do with your life and provides you with opportunites to meet people with a variety of experiences and interests that can help guide your decision-making process.

If college is an option for you... take it. Much easier to go now, while you are young, than it is to interrupt your life later to "go back".

Couldn't agree with this more. I waited 10 years to decide I needed to go back to college. Working full time and studying is tough and takes a lot longer to accomplish. Do it while you're young and you have all the time in the world.

Get a degree, lj23witness. Study something.. anything really. You're interests will change over time but as long as you have a degree, a degree in anything, your options will not be limited.

dcom
08-16-2008, 10:43 PM
One other thing about college that you may want to consider. If the one you go to has a co-op program, seriously consider getting into it. A co-op program lets you work one quarter/semester then attend school the next. It will give you a HUGE advantage over someone who goes through straight through school because you gain the experience employers look for.

Witness

You know, I try to be fair..regardless of the issues my husband has here with you or anyone...BUT..Gee..you really are an annoying pain in the ass!

1st- actually, you must have liked wasting your time clicking all of them b/c you continued to do so!

2nd- I don't need to learn how to post/attach pics..I know how (I have obviously done it before)..I chose to do it that way.

3rd- You need to LEARN how not to be so cranky & rude!

4th- Why would I attach real pics-when like I wrote! My husband already did!!

I guess your quick to post.. but not to read? You're right. Your husband's blatant disrespect for me has me taking it out on you, and that's unfair, so I apologize.
You have to realize, I have earned the respect of many by being a former Marine as well as having full custody of my daughters for the past 11 years. I am used to being respected, and iCafe has turned me sour on the both of you, when it's not your fault. I will no longer direct my ill feelings toward you, as that is wrong. I don't ask for forgiveness, just understanding.

Thanks. We had other floors resanded and polyurethaned when we bought the house. Well, as it turns out I'm allergic to polyurethane. I had huge welts all over my face. It wasn't a pretty site. The allergist took pictures of me like I was a science project.

This is Bean (my wife named her after her favorite lugume,
Butter Bean....at least it wasnt Beano. heh

Interesting story behind this house, it was built in the late 40s
as an answer to afforadable housing for back then. Its called a lustron home,
and a few thousand were built before the plant that produced the parts for it closed here in Ohio. Every once and awhile someone would come by and snap a pic of it, because of its history (certainly not for its looks). Its made entirely out of metal inside
and out. An advantage of it being all metal is we never have a termite
problem, and it stays naturally warm in the winter.
Disadvantages are we have to glue little magnets on back of
pictures to hang them on the walls and its a bit difficult to wallpaper.
Fun little house though, i keep busy with my welder here,... and
it does need a paint job and simonize.

Then you'd have big, sharp, metal sheets flying through the air instead of boards.

Hope Fay leaves you relatively unscathed.

My degree is in video/film production as well, and of course I don't do anything even remotely related to it any longer. Now I'm a manager of an IT R&D shop working for a healthcare company. Before that, my BA allowed me to join the Navy as an officer for 11+ years.

It is interesting, the doors a degree can open for you...

I actually thought about joining the Army to use my degree....but then realized I'm a pacifist, so it might not work so well
