New email number icon no longer shows

The little red number that appears on the upper right corner of the mail icon to tell you whenever you have new unread messages no longer shows up. I can still go to my mail accounts and get all my emails, it's just that the number icon that usually appears on the upper right corner of the mail icon no longer shows up even if I have new unread messages. What might I have turned off to cause this? Also the blue dot that usually appears next to the unread message no longer is appearing.

you probably set it to manually fetch emails. that way it only checks your mail when you open it. so go to settings then fetch new data then set it to hourly, 30 mins, or 15.
