Corporations have been crossing political boundaries for decades. Banks got into the picture and now many nations in Europe share a common currency. We are on the brink of full fledged globalization that will in effect wipe clean national boundaries.

While on the surface that doesn't seem like such a bad idea, it negates the importance of local power structures. Some head honcho in Belgium doesn't understand nor care about the problem with beavers in my neck of the woods. So why would they be better at running my neck of the woods? Well obviously they wouldn't. But the globalists tend to think they will do a better job of it than my local leaders.

We had some hope. But the hope is dwindling. If there was going to be one symbol of nations keeping their individuality, it had to be the olympics. No other event so embodies national pride, and friendly competition more than the games. But those days seem to be coming to an end.

This year a new trend has developed at the Olympics. Outsourcing. Nations actually outsource their olympic athletes!! Are you kidding me??? When nations are practically encouraged to recruit athletes from other nations to compete for one of the greatest symbols of national pride, it surely means the degradation of the meaningfulness of that national pride.

If this keeps up, surely in 10 or 20 years the nations with the most money and influence will recruit the greatest athletes for the games.

The globalists sure know how to fight dirty.

I agree. Globalization has lead to cultural convergence and loss of folk tradition. The worst part is that now that it's started, there is no way it can be stopped.

You're right. I just watched a woman from Zimbabwe win the gold medal. Turns out she left Zimbabwe when she was 17 and attended Auburn U for 4 years and hasn't lived in Zimbabwe since...

But aren't we all supposed to forget our differences?

Nope. We should not fight about our differences. We should celebrate our differences.

The olympics is all about the celebration of our differences.

i don't think this is such a recent occurrence. People have been getting multiple citizenships for years on technicalities.

Absolutely not. We are supposed to "embrace" our differences, not forget them. How vanilla the world would be without our differences...

Yes, people have been having dual citizenship. But (it was I think) the Russians who HIRED two Brazilian women to compete for THEM in the beach volleyball competition. The announcers were talking about how the Russians pay them to compete. They give them a salary, let them keep half of their prize money, and fly them all over the world to compete in various events.

THAT is most certainly NOT historically in the spirit of the Olympic games. But this year several countries are doing this sort of thing. HIRING athletes that have NEVER been citizens of their country.

Exactly, I watch the Olympics to see which nation has the most talent - not which country has the most money to put into winning. That's probably the epitome of messing with the spirit of the games.

Apparently my sarcasm wasn't as thinly veiled as I thought.

Oh you were being sarcastic? oh. Ok. I see. A little [/sarcasm] tag might have helped.
