Is the switch on the left side of the phone, above the volume switch, if you look at it, and see an ?orange dot, slide it to the other position and it should make a sound when you get texts or the phone rings.

Well then, in that case, I've had the same issue. The only fix for me was to restart my phone. I think the issue stopped when I updated to 2.0.1. Are you on 2.0, or 2.0.1?

this problem is pretty common. turn your phone off then back on. Your sound should be back.

it only goes out on "tri tone" for me, i wonder if it has anything to do with the phone also using "tri tone" for voicemail messages???

For me at least, 10 - 20 minutes after I do this, the problem is back.

I had the same problem, i called apple and they told me to restore my phone. It worked, hasnt done it since. Just make sure you back up your phone before u do the restore kuz it wipes it clean. then once its restored itunes will sync the phone back to the way you had it apps etc. to back it up just right click ur iphone in itunes and hit "back up"

hold the home and sleep/wake button simultaneously until the silver apple logo appears and this should fix the problem.

You don't have to hard reset like this to fix the sms alert sound, you can just reset the phone normally (turn it on and off). Hopefully we won't have to do this at all sometime soon tho..

So I'm not the only one. And the vibrate setting isn't strong enough for me to feel it, even when it's in my pocket!

Just for the record- a soft-reset doesn't always immediately get rid of this problem. While it always did before, I did have one day where this did nothing at all.
