I had a custom 2.0 FW that when i tried to go back to apple FW it was stuck in the error 1604 loop... the process failed on the first try with error 6 then did it again and it worked flawlessly!!

... here is how I got it back working. this is a downgrade to 1.14

I let the battery completely die..

This guide is designed to aid iPhone/iTouch users in successfully downgrading their firmware from v2.0 back down to v1.1.4. This guide should be followed ONLY if you are interested in downgrading your firmware. The operating system this has been tried on is Windows Vista, although it should also work for Windows XP as well as Windows Server 2003. If anyone can try this on either of these operating systems and post thier results that would be great.
Step 1: Grab the 1.1.4 Firmware. Below is the link. Make sure you select the proper firmware for your device.
[iPhone Version] (http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-4313.20080226.Sw39i/iPhone1,1_1.1.4_4A102_Restore.ipsw)
[iTouch Version] (http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPod/SBML/osx/bundles/061-4312.20080226.Btu45/iPod1,1_1.1.4_4A102_Restore.ipsw)
Step 2: Grab iTunes 7.5. Below is the link:
[iTunes 7.5] (http://www.filehippo.com/download_itunes/3402/)
Step 3: Remove your existing iTunes Installation (Add/Remove Programs from the control panel in XP).

Nuke the apple folder inside your ‘Program files’ directory.
Nuke the folder: ‘C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple’
*I UNINSTALLED all apple stuff., you might need to rename your iTunes folder in your My Music (or where ever you have your iTunes library) I did..

Step 4: Reboot your machine
Step 5: Install iTunes 7.5.7
Step 6: Kick your iPhone/iTouch into DFU restore mode.
Step 7: Open iTunes 7.5 and it will recognize your device in ‘Recovery Mode’ Once it’s open you will see a ‘Restore’ button. SHIFT+Click the ‘Restore’ Button to bring up a ‘Browse file Dialog’.
Step 8: Select the 1.1.4 firmware you downloaded earlier and iTunes will then restore to the Stock 1.1.4 firmware.
Step 9: If everything went OK you should see your iphone/itouch boot into 1.1.4.
Step 10: Unlock using your favorite unlock software. (Optional)
