So last night I downloaded some of the free apps from the AppStore (Labyrinth, Tris, iSaber) and I bought a couple, and things seemed to be working fine.

When I got up this morning, I noticed that my default apps all seem to work fine, but none of the 3rd party apps work - they go to their respective startup screens, sit for a few seconds and then I'm back to the springboard.

Anyone else see this type of behavior?

Have you rebooted yet?

Mine has started to do this all over again. Rebooting doesn't do anything except eat up my time.

Hook it up to iTunes, uncheck Applications in the appropriate syncing tab, sync to remove, then check Applications again and sync again. It wipes your saved data (Aurora Feint progress, AIM login, etc), but they'll be freshly reinstalled and not die anymore.

If I remove all of the apps, will I lose my ecconote, voicenote, and recorder recordings? What about my Shazam bookmarks? And my gas app records. I'm very worried about losing those since these apps don't have any way to get the things off of the phone (yet). And even if they did I don't have a way of opening the app to get them.

Yeah I had rebooted a few times... What worked for me was simply downloading another app - then afterthat installation process completed everything else was working.

I'm glad that worked out for you. Many people have been experiencing this problem as well.

I have had to restore about 7 times total.... about every 3 days or so. My apps stop working and a simple reset does not work. I have to end up doing a complete restore and on top of that, every iphone backup I have is always corrupt for some reason!?!!? So I have to redo everything. Good thing I am using MobileMe or I would lose all my contacts and calendars and bookmarks.

I hope they get this app closing thing straightened out soon.

I know this is an old thread, but it came up early in my searches for a solution to this problem which happened to me just today, so I figured it's still active in some way, and other searchers may benefit from my post.

I do have the most recent software on my iPod Touch 2ndG (OS 2.2). Installing a new app from the app store got the other apps to open properly for me, thanks for the suggestion.

I also got some info that might be interesting to the techies here. After the app crashes, I plugged my iPod into my computer, and iTunes came up saying it wanted to send crash reports. I chose to see the details, and noticed that there were few differences between different reports from the same app (when they were crashing I tried opening several apps many times), the reports from different apps varried greatly.

Some examples:

Pandora
Exception Type: EXC_BAD_INSTRUCTION (SIGILL)
Exception Codes: 0x00000001, 0x00000000

TapTap
Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0xffffff74

TWC
Exception Type: EXC_BAD_INSTRUCTION (SIGILL)
Exception Codes: 0x00000001, 0x00000000

Labyrinthlite
Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)
Exception Codes: 0x00000101, 0x00000123

Google Earth
Exception Type: EXC_BAD_INSTRUCTION (SIGILL)
Exception Codes: 0x00000001, 0x5d7c6b8e

Flashlight
Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0xfe587b2c

AIM
Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0xff544fe2

As you can see, most of the errors are very different from each other (I see 4 major types in these 7 apps). Yet, within each app, everything I put here was exactly the same. I'm guessing this might be why the Touch developers haven't fixed this completely yet; it's so hard to match different error reports to the same problem, never mind figuring out what's causing them. I certainly wouldn't want to debug this stuff.

This BS is still happening, a year later. Ran into it today. None of my third-party apps will run on the phone.

WTF Apple? There is no excuse for this. Why are we managing all the applications and data on a handheld computer using a JUKEBOX APP? A grossly defective jukebox app, at that.

Restoring the phone to factory settings and then syncing the apps back on will solve this problem.

Not really; that'll blow away all your application data.
