Don't quite know where to post this, so I'll try here.

I have both Bellsouth and Yahoo email accounts. I can get emails from them on my iPhone 3G with no issues, except for one thing: When I check my email using Microsoft Outlook Express on my home PC, I receive and read my messages, then I delete them. Now, later on, when I am out, I check the emails on my iPhone. The problem is that I have to read the same messages that I already read on my home PC earlier. I would like to be able to read new messages on my home PC, or on my iPhone, whichever one I do first, and not have them show up again on the other device once I delete them.

Someone said I need an IMAP account instead of a POP3 account. Bellsouth doesn't offer IMAP, not sure about Yahoo. Is there anything I can do to solve this? Can Mobile Me help with this issue? (As far as I can tell, Mobile Me is just another way to send and receive email, which I don't need.)

Thanks.

Why not set up Outlook Express and the phone to both delete the message from server after it is downloaded? This would solve your problem, but the drawback is if you see an email on the phone that you would like to save or take a better look at on the PC you are sunk.

Is it possible to set up the iPhone to do this? For Outlook Express, I guess you can use Message Rules to do this, but beside the disadvantage mentioned, the home PC would have to be left on in order for this to work.

There is a setting on the iPhone (under Settings > Your Mail Account > Advanced) called "Delete from server" and the options are Never, Seven days, and When removed from inbox. I've never used this, but I imagine if you set this to "When removed from inbox," then deleting a mail on your iPhone would take it off the server, and you wouldn't get it in Outlook Express. There might be a similar setting in Outlook Express.

You should note that any messages you don't delete (or I guess put in another folder) you will still get in Outlook Express, as they will remain on the server.

You are right to say that this would not happen if you were using IMAP. An IMAP account truly syncs with the server and knows if you've read a mail or not on any device or location. I don't believe Yahoo supports IMAP, but I could be wrong. I know it would stink to have a new email address, but I have to say that Gmail is tough to beat if you have an iPhone--it supports IMAP and works flawlessly. If I can see a new mail on my computer, I can then read it on my phone and watch as moments later it shows as "read" on my computer. Really good stuff. (That's just an example--I could also read it on the computer and it would show as "read" on the phone too.)
