Questions about tethering and how it affects your plan

2 questions, and please don't answer with a guess, only answer if you know.

First, what methods of detecting tethering does at&t have other then monitoring how much data you use? (in other words, if I tether but don't use any more data in a month then a normally do with my iphone, will they have any way of detecting it?)

Second, what are the consequences if at&t catches you tethering?

I know that AT&T has the right to cancel your account if you are caught. As far as HOW they catch you, no clue.
