WHY? They have a decent amount of screen real estate...
I have installed many keyboards on my WM6 HTC Touch, and just about all of them beat the iPhone's... and Cootek's TouchPal is just amazing.
Why does the iPhone keyboard have to suck so much?
I am even considering returning it over the keyboard... either so frustrating or so slow to text, enter addresses, etc...

75% of the time the wrong key ends up "magnified" when I pretty much press the key head on!

that happened to me when i first bought my iphone. you'll get used to it or do like me. keep typing what you wanna spell and it'll auto correct it:smile:
How long have you had it? If it hasnt been very long, give it some time. I bet you will grow to love it once you get used to it.

The cootek touchpal has word correction, word completion (i.e. type in a-g-g-r and it would suggest aggravate, for example)
I wish the iPhone at least provided some other option for a keyboard or better yet, make it user-replaceable (like on windows mobile.. you can just download a different keyboard or switch it WHENEVER...)
If I am heading home from work and need to write emails, maybe another keyboard is best... apart from that, maybe one that works well for texting/etc. is ideal...
They need to improve it!!!
The keyboard learns your typing habits, the more you type a word, it will start suggesting it.

It took me a bit, but I find I'm getting more and more used to it.
Don't lose hope, just keep on using it.

I find the iPhone's keyboard to be the fastest I have ever typed on. And I used to have an enV, SideKicks, and a few other WinMo phones with keyboards.
If you give it some time and practice, you'll be just like me and the other iPhone-ers when it comes to typing on it.
Btw, Welcome to EiC  :)

It took like a day or two (and it was really annoying then) but right now I'd say the iphone has the best keyboard I've ever had on a pda / phone (I've had a few normal phones as well as win mobile ones in the past). It's actually a god send from the windows mobile keyboard which was such a pain in the ass (even with some addon keyboards, no one ever got it right).

As everyone else has suggested, please give it some time. It will figure out your typing patterns. Just don't go back to correct things and let it use it's own auto correct feature. I use both thumbs to type and rarely ever hit the back key. I just type as I would and if I hit a W instead of an E it figures it out. Hands down this is the best phone keyboard around.

I actually love the keyboard because the iPhones screen is so touch sensitive that you are literally just "tapping" the screen so as you get better and more used it you will be typing faster than someone thats using a blackberry or cramped treo keyboare

I hate with a passion soft keyboards and predictive text, so imagine my surprise when I discovered how good the iPhone's keyboard was for my use. I've used it for SMSing and a fair bit of email, and once you start to trust it, its surprisingly good. I find it intuitive, and can comfortably type fairly quickly with only a few errors. I like the way it learns your own nicknames or made up words and gives you the choice to select or refuse them.
I always wondered if a 'stow-away' keyboard peripheral would get released for the iPhone, as they did with the PDAs - seems like a good idea for those that do a lot of typing ?

I like the keyboard also. I am typing a lot in English, and in Hungarian also. I am having a problem with it correcting my Hungarian words so I have to keep tapping the x. Any way to turn off the word suggestion function?

As said above, give it time. I wasn't a fan of the keyboard at first either, but now I love it and can compose giant emails with it. I hate physical keyboards; the tiny buttons aggravate me.

I rather like it. I haven't ever used a pda with a physical keyboard for comparison however. One actual advantage I've noticed for typing in portait mode is that doing it with one hand (the same hand that is holding the phone) is quite easy and fast.

I can type completely coherent and articulate messages when I'm totally wasted. Obviously the fault lies with your texting abilities and not with the technology.

If you hate the iPhone keyboard, return the phone, and buy a crackberry. Problem solved.

I am already loving the keyboard and I still suck at typing on it lol. I've never owned a phone that had an auto correcting feature as advanced as this (which might be sad on my part lol.) I really haven't run into any problems so far, and I'm already typing pretty quick.

Wow Hayes, well said.
The iPhone keyboard is among the best features of the phone. It definitely takes some getting used to but once you do, you'll start flying in no time. The word correction and other features of it exemplify the awesomeness even more.

Sounds like you should return it and go for a blackberry bold when it's released.
I've had a Tilt, Touch Cruise, N95-3, N95-4, HTC 8525, Palm 755p, MotoQ, and a BB Curve. Honestly of all of them I liked the Q's keyboard best but other than that, the thing sucked. The iPhone is the best all around convergence device (ok tied with the N95) but the keyboard is one of the things that makes me use it over my N95.

My last phone had a T9 "keyboard." So, upgrading to this is like upgrading from a Model-T Ford to a modern day Ferrari. :2cool: I like it even better than a physical keyboard like the BB Bold because I don't have to be exact. I can press and slide. I've gotten quite proficient with using the tips of my thumbs.
