The title says it all. Im very interested in developing apps for the iPhone. I have a couple of good ideas I wouldnt mind trying out. But I dont have a Mac. Anyone know if Apple ever plans on porting the SDK to Windows. Or do I have to shell out the cash for a Mac??

I don't think it will.
I heard it has to do with the iPhone's os, but that could be complete bull/

Well, I better get a solid gold idea for an app then, so I can justify spending a couple grand on a new Mac!
You never need a good excuse for getting a Mac, especially with programs like VMWare Fusion that let you run Windows programs. :)

Since the iPhone runs OS X the best a Windows PC could do is emulate that OS. Development has to be done on the OS that will run the software. Get a Mac, you will love it (from a Win user since 1982).

Ive been wanting a Mac for a while now. Ever since I used it for one of my graphics design classes back in the 90s. But I spend way to much money on electronics and my wife is not to fond of that fact. Ive been trying to ease her into the idea by telling her I can make money doing it (hopefully) but she isnt buying into that.

Just keep in mind programming won't be a cinch. A lot of people here think they could just pick it up and develop apps.
If spending the money is such a huge deal, why not pair with a developer and get him/her to develop your app? There are developers at EIC...

Ive thought about that too. Im pretty good with code and with learning new code. So I actually am interested in the developement of the apps. I dont think it will be easy by any chance, but I would love to give it a try.

my guess is that apple doesnt want developers making apps for the iphone (running mobile os x) if they dont have os x

aenti, you are the double post police!! :laugh2: I love it.
Anyway, on topic. Does anyone know if there is a tutorial for the SDK that can be viewed on a PC? Im interested to see more of how the SDK works, even if I cant use it yet. I searched Apple.com and didnt see anything.

Yea, it's an emulation of OS X, called Hackintosh.
As for your question Merlin, I believe it was demoed in WWDC. You could always search sdk tutorial on youtube and find some good results.

Yeah, I saw the demo, looked pretty simple to be honest. But I dont think thats the whole SDK, just the object based portion of it. There has to be something out there, like HTML for dummies, but instead SDK for me!!

There is, but it's quite complicated (it involves tampering with the hardware) and not to mention illegal. You can easily run any version of Windows on a Mac.

I really feel like an idiot about this. I was trying to be a smart ass because I have a mac, and can run both mac and windows, and was not aware that you can actually run mac on a windows machine. Sorry about that. Learn something new everyday.

you can write web apps SPECIFICALLY for the iPhone...
http://developer.apple.com/webapps/
that's the closest thing for me... :(
dang SDK for macs only...

I might go that route too until I get my mac in September. Good call, I forgot all about web apps!

. . . I forgot all about web apps!
And everyone else has too. I wouldn't waste my time.

You are so right. I didnt even use web apps before we had the app store.
I wonder if it translates to the SDK though? So in other words, I create a web app and when I get my hands on the SDK I just have to change a few arrays, strings, functions... and put it right into Xcode.
Im really just looking for a way to get to know the SDK but unfortunately that isnt doable without a Mac.
I found some Cocoa and Objective-C tutorials, but thats hard to read through and learn unless I can actually play along.

unless of course your work relies on web apps for just about everything, and having a portable web enabled smart phone makes life easier... hee hee...

Since they added Enterprise to the SDK, a lot of big companies are going to start making apps for the iPhone and only their users would get the apps. More secure than web apps.
But I think that market is still cornered by BB so Im not sure how many companies are going to buy into that.
So ldivinag, what kind of web apps does your company rely on?

I work for a pubic university in kalifornia and there is a movement to move just about everything as a web app...
They're different ballgames entirely. Writing a web app is little more than some Javascript, HTML, and CSS trickery catered specifically to the iPhone.
Hackintosh'll do. Just make sure you have a lot of free time and a spare hard drive you're not using for anything else.

Actually someone is porting it at the moment. I don't know how this is going to work because the SDK relies on some frameworks that windows doesn't have but this guy seems determined so we should have faith. He estimates it to be released in about 6 months but he's looking for beta testers up until September 30th. Here's his blog http://wisdk.tumblr.com/
That seems like it's more for jailbreak software development... Pretty interesting, though. But it sounds like it could get stomped out by Apple if they're not quick to release something that explodes to success fast enough.

yeh, it's just for creating apps for jailbroken devices but that could be a good thing, it gives you more freedom. Hope I get picked as a beta tester anyway :)
