View Full Version : Automatic switching between E and 3G

I thought this was an automatic. I was sending text messages just now and I kept getting an error message. I looked and the 3G was gone and I had no signal strength. I went into settings and turned off the 3G and the E came up with all bars and the text went fine. WTF? I thought it would flip over the E if there was no 3G signal.

It should. That's strange, does anyone else experience this?

I have seen it once or twice on my phone. In fact I think this is part of the reason when I am at home that my phone doesn't go out and automatically check for new email. It has to do with a poor signal at my house for 3g. If I turn off 3G the problem "seems" to go away although not everytime. My email should be checking every 15 minutes as that is what I have it set for but sometimes it won't check for 4 hours, then when I go into my inbox it will check and pull the email in? Very strange!

It gets even better. Once I am in E and turn the 3G back on it says I have no service! 3G must be out in Dallas at the moment.

3g is very unreliable as of right now. It'll get better as we go on, so hopefully this is just a short term issue.

The switch between the two isn't as seamless as it should be. Often it will continue to search for a 3G signal eating up battery power instead of switching straight to EDGE. I live right in downtown Denver with ample 3G towers in close proximity but cannot get a decent 3G signal inside my own home. I keep it turned off unless I'm outside somewhere where the 3G signal is good. Otherwise it's EDGE and Wi-Fi until AT&T's coverage maps are accurate.

Software update won't fix the network, that's up to ATT.
Have you tried clearing the plastic back? Your hand might be interfering or some weird thing like that.

Same problem in certain areas of Atlanta also - at least for me.

It's crazy seeing all these big cities having 3g troubles, I live here in Milwaukee,WI (pretty small compared to Dallas, Atlanta, etc.) but 3g has always been fine for me pretty much anywhere I go I've got a constant connection(other than work because of the cage (for bank tellers) that i work in. My connection's even fine at home when I was testing it out.

That's because it is constantly searching for the 3G signal. It's best to turn 3G off in those instances and rely on EDGE.

Ever since I upgraded to 2.0.1 my phone won't connect to 3G. I'm in a huge 3G area. This firmware sucks, and the page still jumps as I type. :-/

I haven't d/l'd the update yet, but I'm really disappointed to hear that this is still a problem. I was reading good things about the improvement in the typing lag and applications opening more quickly. Guess I have a reason, already, to look forward to 2.0.2.

Yeah a fellow Milwaukee person! I actually live in West Allis, but 3G seems fine here and in Milwaukee. I do wish the phone would take the strongest signal, instead of staying on 3G.
