Im really getting sick and tired of the horrible issue with updating apps. I went to update cube runner and writingpad, when my 3G suddenly closes to the black screen. I then have to do a hard reset, to be welcomed by the apple logo loading screen....where my phone has been for the last 15 minutes. WTF is up? I searched through 9 pages till I decided to just post my own, so sorry if its been discussed.

I'm not sure if it's been discussed, but in case you love the company of more people experiencing the same misery... it's happened to me too. Eventually it finally did come back. Have patience. At least if it takes all day/night the battery should die and you should be able to plug it back in and try the restart process all over again. LOL For that reason I would suggest that you keep it out of the charger.
Oh, and don't update on your iPhone. Update with iTunes. In fact, you aren't supposed to use the iPhone app store for anything because of bad performance issues. I know. It sucks.

Oh, the phone started to get very warm so I shut it down out of caution. should I just let it keep on keeping on?
SmartAlx
08-04-2008, 05:53 PM
Mine got warm too, but it did come back. It's probably not good to let it get too hot.
If it doesn't come back after an hour or so, or before it gets too hot, you might need to put it into recovery mode and do a restore. When was the last time you did a full backup?
TheFamousOne
08-04-2008, 06:02 PM
I believe I did a full backup last night. I plugged it in and it automatically backed up, and was in the process of so for about an hour.
How do I put it into recovery and do a restore? And when I do this, will I lose all my content on the phone?
SmartAlx
08-04-2008, 06:12 PM
As long as it finished the backup you won't lose anything, although you'll have to put your music back on the phone.
Open iTunes, go to Edit->Preferences, Syncing tab. Look to see if your recent backup is there.
There are a lot of instructions online to putting your phone in DFU mode.
This I found with google.

I was just in the hospital 3 hours ago with my mom in the ER.
I had a call from her doctor and in the middle it just stopped and went to the black screen then to the apple logo!
I'm PISSED!
This is rediculous and I had to ask for a nurse to make the call for me which went to an answering service!
I had the doctor on my phone and now I have to wait till tomorrow.
Apple has to get a reliable update soon...this is poor.

Alright I tried letting it load for about an hour, didnt work. I let the battery die and tried again, didnt work. I tried restoring, didnt work. Now it is stuck on the apple logo screen, and the phone wont turn off. Resetting the phone isnt working. I'll try again, but if it doesnt work I have no idea what to do. Maybe Ill try plugging it in overnight. ****, Im scared and pissed right now.

I was able to get out of it by holding the power button and the close button.
I then connected it to my laptop and did the power button and the close button again and it started up.
Not sure if this will help, but it got me out of a jam earlier today.

I THOUGHT i was being smart by keeping my old phone just incase something like this were to happen, but the geniouses at apple/att decided that the new sim wouldnt work with older phones, reguardless of the fact that its the same size/shape. Way to support your ****ing customers.

That means money that could be in my pocket WONT be in my pocket because of a problem outside of my hands.

here's one method, i'm trying to remember the other sites i saw fixes at.
Dock your iPhone. Hold the power and home buttons for 10 seconds, then let go of the power button and continue to hold the home button until iTunes recognizes your iPhone in Restore Mode. Then Restore it.

This was posted on another site. Not sure if its the same as the last.
It was working fine this morning.. I put it in my pocket got it out a couple of hours later to make a call and the screen was blank. Restarted and it just hangs on the apple logo. Left it for 30minutes and no luck - still stuck on the logo.
So from here the only solution I can see is a DFU restore (this should also work for everyone else who's having problems not being able to get iTunes to recognise the phone)
DFU restore can be done by plugging the phone into the sync cable and opening itunes. Then hold Home and Power for 7sec (until the screen blacks out) then at that point you release the power button but keep holding home. Keep holding it until you see itunes detect a phone in DFU mode. From there you can restore and then use the option to restore the phone from your latest itunes backup once the firmware has been restored.
Saves you going to the Apple store to have them do it.
Hope that helps a few people get their phones working - however it's not going to fix the apparent bug in 2.0 so expect it to keep happening until apple solves it

Yesterday I plugged my iPhone into the laptop and iTunes said that there was a new update available for the iPhone software would I like to download and install. I clicked OK and that's where the problems began. That was about noon and I have not been able to use my iPhone since. First it hung about 3/4 of the way through the update process. Blacked out my PC and restarted it. Now when I plug the iPhone in it sas that it would work faster with USB 2.0, and iTunes states that my iPhone is detected to be in a rstore mode would I like to continue. It's been well over 12 hours now in restore mode and still nothing. And on top of that what happened to my USB 2.0? Yesterday I missed 2 appointments and could not get a hold of them because my phone is out of commission and right now I seem to have lost the ability to use my iPhone because as it is right now it's a $200 paperweight.
When the local Apple store opens at 8am I intend to be there, and will not leave the store until one of the following happens....
A. My iPhone gets working again, or completely replaced
B. I get a full refund of the iPhone, and the accessories (2 cases and dock) and apps purchased
C. or the police come and take me away.

Which OS version did you have 5A345, 5A347 or 2.0.1?
And was your iPhone jailbroken and/or unlocked?

EXACTLY the same... Except mine told you to turn the phone off and sprintrjm told you to dock it. But they both do the same thing.
And I'll just bet that the alternate version on my link...
Step 1. Connect iphone to USB then listen to the sound when it connect and disconnect.
Step 2. Hold the home and power buttons until hear the disconnect sound then release power button.
Step 3. Wait until you hear another sound then release home button.
is the same thing too.

It has happened to my original iPhone two or three times now. Not bricked up, thankthegods. But annoying, nonetheless. I've simply held down Home and Sleep keys until it snaps back into consciousness.
Original 4GB with v 2.0.1 (5B108), never tampered with.
Seems Apple needs to read all of the post to fix these bugs..

oh wow... I was just having this problem a few days ago, and could find no one else having this problem, so while I regret others are having this problem, I'm glad I'm not the only one!
Mine started with trying to update an app via the iPhone, after going through the restore process two times, I did not use the iPhones app store anymore (although I think it's ridiculous to have a function on the iPhone you can't even use and causes you to restore everytime). It seemed if I downloaded apps and updated apps via iTunes it was okay.... but then it started doing it then too, and iTunes would freeze the whole nine yards. I probably restored no less than 8 times in two days!!!!! Also just an FYI this happened before and after I updated to the 2.0.1 firmware. I initially thought that the firmware was a fix for this... guess not!
well, then meanwhile I went to sync an app onto my roomates iphone and it did the same f'in thing!!!! Oh man was I livid!!!!!! I did not want to have to restore, so I just held the home and power button down to reboot it probably about twenty times (it took a while to do this as I had to wait everytime to see if it would ever go past the apple) and finally it did!
So next time this happens, I'll just keep doing that until it comes back. I do not want to restore AGAIN!!! It's ridiculous that I even have to worry about it, as a few times it's just happened for seemingly no reason! ugh!
I feel everybody's pain on this one!!!! :embarrassed:
oh by the way I have a 1rst gen phone, so does my roomate

Same with me from the first day 11th Jul. I didn't use it for a few weeks til I returned it to the Apple store. He restored but it continues to go black in the middle of a freakin conversation. I will just leave it and use my unlimited phone. I want to toss it but it cost too much. I never ever had this problem with v1.

Hey WTF. This just started happening today yesterday everything was fine. My 3g keeps going back to the home screen for no apparent reason. I'll select email and after about 10sec it will go back to the home screen. Then i'll try and lock it and it has a slow responce it'll act like the home screen button is stuck and when i press the power button i'll take a pic of the screen. But worse of all it keeps going back to the home screen. Weather it's email, internet, pictures etc...that im looking at. Whats going on? I didn't think it could be the update because i did that a couple of days ago and it was working fine till now. Actuallyl updating was a small pain because it took so long to backup my iphone that the power on it died before anything could happen...what crap!!!!

i know this post is mostly about the apple logo getting stuck and not rebooting to normal phone usage and that's been happening to me but only after i use pwnage. ADVICE i can offer is to people who are doing things with their iphone whether texting or safari browsing the net. IFFFFFF The iphone freeze and you cant do anything.... what i do is just repeatedly hit the home button and then power button.. home.. power.. home .. power ... home power.. really fast and then eventually it will unfreeze after like 5-10 seconds and go to the lock screen and then your phone will work...... if this helps anyone with just freezing... let me know

sorry to hear that man. it works sometimes for me but another thing i read from some other forums that if your using pwnage for your phone and you get stuck on the pineapple screen that it took him like 2 minutes of waiting and then it would go to the unlock screen. *sigh* I was kinds hoping this constant crashing while syncing or downloading apps, and having to restore was a more prevalent problem, but I'm just not seeing that much about it, which means apple coming out with a fix doesn't seem to be an option for me. I am so sick of this, , I'm probably on my 20th restore in a week and a half, 2 trips to the genius bar have produced nothing. I've tried using two different pc's, same thing. It's just not that much fun having an iPhone anymore :embarrassed:

Well apparently I can't even go in without an appointment to just exchange, even though I've been in twice this last week with the same damn problem, I've done everything they told me to try to no avail, but I still have to wait around. whatever
and apparently I'm just talking to myself here, so I will not bother anyone with my problem any longer!
Good Day! :laugh2:

Dang, I go away for a few weeks and return and people are in a frenzy!!!
I had to reset my phone twice now. God damn its a pain in the ass! I am NEVER installing/updating apps directly from the phone again, I'll tell you that much.

My wife has a iphone 3G 16gb will latest OS with iTunes 8.x running on Vista
Whilst synching the phone an error occurred
The iphone is 'frozen' in the sync screen (USB icon with arrow pointing to iTunes logo.)
I have tried the support pages etc and have followed all instructions re resetting view on/off, home key for 'x' seconds and home key plus on/off.
The phone no longer appears in iTunes.
All calls go to voice mail and the phone does not respond (no ring, no vibration etc)
I can sync my iphone successfully using the same itunes, USB port etc
Can anyone help please
