View Full Version : If you sell your 3G, can you cancel the data plan?

My brother wants to buy a 3G but he wants to know that if he changes his mind and sells it if he will be able to cancel his data plan but keep the voice and use it on a normal cell phone.
They wouldn't force you to pay for a service that your phone can't use would they?
So the basic question is does the contract lock you into voice and data or just voice?

Not sure how it works in the states. but here with Rogers, if you cancel the data plan early, you have to pay a fee of $5/mo. for remainder of contract to a max of $100.

that would be cool, I'd rather just use wi-fi free at home, pay for voice and sms... I wouldn't mind canceling the $30 data plan...

FYI I'm not asking if you can cancel the data plan and keep using the iphone, I'm pretty sure that is not allowed.
I'm asking if you can cancel the data plan if you switch to a regular cell phone (if say you lose, break, or sell your iphone)
I know either way you're locked into the 2 year contract for voice at least.

It would seem to me that canceling the data plan is the same as canceling the contract. I think you have a 30 day period to return the phone with a 10% restocking fee. After that, you could get hit with ETF.

With at&t you are allowed to change your plan whenever you want and as often as you'd like without penalty. I've changed mine a few times in the past year alone (went to family plan, then realized not enough minutes, added data for blackjack, etc..)
you should be able to change to just a regular voice plan if you switch phones with no problems at all. In fact, you can do it online yourself without having to talk to a csr.

is at&t really going to force you to cancel your entire contract with them when you want to keep a voice plan?
The only result of that is them losing money if I'm willing to keep paying for voice for 2 years.
I don't think this could be true, just from a logical standpoint
Does anyone KNOW the answer to this question or is it all a guessing game?

canceling data is ok...although i THINK that when u downgrade service, there is a service fee (not when you upgrade though)
so adding features is always free, but downgrading service or moving to less minutes, i think u pay a one time fee

You can cancel any at&t data plan at any time with no penalty.

There is no fee associated with reducing your minutes other than losing your rollover minutes.

Ok. This is how it works. The data plan is a feature. You can cancel/change/add any feature with AT&T any time you want for free, in person or online. It's easy actually. Shoot! I'll bet you could cancel the data plan and keep the iPhone. You just wouldn't get any EDGE or 3G.
The hitch is that anytime you change your plan (remove features, add features, change minutes, add sms) your 2 year contract starts all over.

You can, but AT&T will put it back on when they see you are using it (it identifies itself on the network). It's in your contract.
...and no your contract does not start over.

Just don't use it then. Turn off edge and 3g.
When I lowered my minutes, they reset my 2 year contract.

no it doesn't. I change my son's plan all the time and his contract still expires in Dec.

It can happen, but maybe because the way the rep entered it.
About 5 years ago I added 2 phones to my line that where paid for and it said I couldn't upgrade for 2 years (they didn't subsidize the phone). A call to AT&T fixed that when I wanted to upgrade.

It can happen, but maybe because the way the rep entered it.There was no rep. I did it on the internet. I found out later on and called to complain and they said that is is how it is. Anytime you make any change to your contract, it's basically like you are a new customer.

Hmmm, when I bought my iphone 3G, two guys standing by me said that you can change your plans at anytime and AT&T will not renew your contract. Now some of you guys are saying yes they will, and others are saying no, I'm confused. Well, outside calling AT&T, I found this at their website, but is this only for non-iphone users or for all?
Question:
How can I change my rate plan? How can I add minutes? Answer:
If you're interested in switching rate plans, you can see what your options are and select a new plan within myWireless Account (https://www.wireless.att.com/olam/dashboardAction.olamexecute). You can either increase the minutes on the type of plan you have presently or switch types completely.
You can change your rate plan online within myWireless Account by following these instructions, and for specific instructions on changing to an AT&T UnitySM plan, refer to topic: How Can I Switch to an AT&T Unity Rate Plan? (http://www.wireless.att.com/answer-center/main.jsp?t=solutionTab&ft=searchTab&ps=solutionPanels&locale=en_US&_dyncharset=UTF-8&solutionId=KB76292)
From the myWireless Account (https://www.wireless.att.com/olam/dashboardAction.olamexecute) home page, select the Change Rate Plan link in the Rate Plan & Features box or click here: Change Rate Plan (logged in users only) (https://www.wireless.att.com/olam/changeRatePlanFlow.olamexecute).
Click Change to this plan next to the desired rate plan.
Compare the features on your current plan and add any desired features to your new plan.
Submit your new plan and features by selecting Next.
Your new rate plan will take effect with your next billing cycle. Customers who change rate plans to any one of the company's standard wireless plans, during the course of their contract, will not be asked to extend their existing contract or enter into a new one.
The ability to change a FamilyTalk plan online is available. Customers on data plans cannot change their plan online and must Contact AT&T by Phone (http://www.wireless.att.com/about/contact-us/contact-us-phone.jsp) to change to a different rate plan.

it could be that major changes to the foundational cell phone plan restart the contract, but just changing features doesn't.
I know I've added and removed text messaging online for mine and it's never changed the contract dates. But I've never tried changing minutes.

Wow, I wonder if I have some recourse because they definitely renewed my plan when I changed minutes a long time ago. Had they not renewed my plan, I would now be eligible for the $300 3G because I would have purchased my other subsidized phone sooner.

Because it works great in my area? Because the plan I'm on is cheaper then anything anyone else offers for what I need?
Because I choose to? And believe it or not your opinion is not necessarily what everyone else thinks?

GAYT&T
The more you use that term, the less respect I have for you. Seriously, don't you think it might be getting a bit stale? There are lots of very happy AT&T clients on here.

So I tried to cancel the data plan today, told them I lost the iPhone 3G and need to cancel the data plan, but they said they will need the new phone i will get's imei code..
is there a way around this? can i just change my iphone's imei and give them that again? or does it even matter?
can i just give them my sister's imei phone's code and just continue using the iphone 3g without a data plan?
or is the sim card connected to the imei code?

Yes........

Yes........
The data plan stays with the sim card right? Because yesterday I called AT&T and told them I wanted the $15 unlimited media net on one of my lines (my brothers line since I gave him the iPhone v1) and they said it was tied to a tilt that I returned a month ago... So I gave them my sisters imei number and they added the plan to my brothers sim card... So every phone he puts his sim in... The plan stays with his sim... Btw I put his sim in my sisters phone before I gave them the imei number...

I tried a different rep and they cancelled my plan with no problem, Right now i'm sitting using my wifi on the iphone 3g and don't have to pay the $30/month as of now..

My friends Iphone was stolen two weeks ago and he went to at&t and got a new sim card for a phone that I gave him and they adjusted his account so he would not get charged for the data plan associated with the iphone.
