Ok, so I'm a student at TCU in Ft. Worth. I recently purchased the new iPHone3g to replace my old palm lifedrive. I was following the instructions my school provides to setup email on iphones at http://www.tr.tcu.edu/iPhone.htm and came across quite a big issue. Step six tells me to go to advanced settings and set SSL for incoming to OFF and SSL for outgoing to ON.
WELLLLL on the I-3g, there is no longer an advanced settings section. The only place I have found one is for email accounts that have already been set up on the phone, and even then they don't give the option to change for outgoing or incoming.
So does anyone know of a way to setup my email? I'd be ****** if my iphone was just as useless as my brick of a palm.

There is only one choice on the SSL option. You have either on or off. You do not get a choice for in our out. Go to your email account, the second to last choice at the bottom (right above delete account) is "ADVANCED" Click on advanced and set SSL to OFF.
This should do it. There is an "advanced" choice on every established email account.
PS: You may have to establish the account first, whether it works or not to get to the advanced button. I am not sure but it may not show up as a choice when you are creating the account.
Good luck!

Correct.
Advanced doesn't show up until you create and verify an email account with your mail server.

soooo I'm doubting apple now. If I need the option to first setup the acct, what good does it do me? Haha seems like a nasty loop imposed by a redesign

UPDATE:
Sooo I was getting an error that said something about SMTP:cbragan@smtp.tcu.edu is not valid....soo since the outgoing fields said optional i deleted the password and username for outgoing and get this error message:
Secure Connection Failed
The certificate for "(null)" may not be valid.
Both error messages arrive after trying my settings, which fails and it offers me to try without SSL. I then get the above errors.

If I were you, I would double check that you have entered the incoming and outgoing host names exactly as your school has it listed. Also most email servers use case sensitive logins. Make sure you enter your user name and password in the same "case" on you phone that you would enter say on your lap top. Remember if you have as little as one "." in the wrong place this will not work.

If you go online and set up a gmail account at www.gmail.com (http://www.gmail.com) you can use gmail as your outgoing mail server. Works all the time like a charm. As a matter of fact you can in most cases actually use your incoming email address on gmail as your outgoing address on Gmail. Gmail more or less acts as a relay. This way people will recognize your email address.
Good luck

Badass!! I had finally gotten my gmail setup last night, so all that I had to do was enable it as an additional outgoing server.
Thanks loads all!
To anyone else having issues withgmail. I was able to get the wizard to work once I left range of my home wifi. All settings were the same, so all I can guess is that my home network was holding up the setup with ssl somehow.
