Restore version 1 iPhone

I have the iPhone reset and it is showing the plug and the iTunes disk on the screen. I downloaded the NEW version of iTunes and it just sits there with the icon at the bottom of the phone looking like its trying to connect just going in circles. I reset with Ziphone to restore the jailbreak and than the Plug and Itunes icons appeared on the phone. Do I need to do a soft restore with the buttons? Using the iTunes version 7.7 and on a different computer. That's the problem right? It has to be restored from the original computer? Or does it take hours!

Yes I got it to restore to version 2.0 on my laptop. Now he is at home trying to restore the phone on his laptop to get his contacts, etc... and says it has been syncing for almost 30 minutes. I told him when he got home to download the 7.7 version of iTunes which he did and then hook up his iPhone and do a restore to his laptop that had all his contacts etc... He says it states syncing on the screen. Anything else I should know? Can he uplug it during the retsore and start over without harming the restore? Should I have told him to hit Update instead of Restore.

It was working fine with the 2.0 version when he left my house but he did not have his contacts on the phone. It was if it was brand NEW!

Could it be stuck in a loop on Restore?
