I believe the only way you can do this is by using their paid service. Then you can use the push function to receive mail. The regular hotmail will not work with the Iphone.

Maybe set it up as POP account and set it to fetch and close intervals.

When gmail first came out you needed an invite. I still have invites available up on my screen when I sing in. It could be they are now for encourage use of gmail, and maybe they are not needed.
