Unlock V1 currently running 2.0?

I am sorry if this has been answered but there seems to be all kinds of opinions on whether its possible to unlock V1 phone that is currently running 2.0.

My version 1 iphone is running 2.0 software. Can I unlock this phone to be used on another GSM carrier. If so, what steps and programs are needed? Must I downgrade to 1.4 first?
